Taree and surrounding areas on New South Wales' Mid North Coast are grappling with severe flooding after relentless rainfall caused the Manning River to surpass its 1929 record, reaching over six meters. The deluge has led to widespread evacuations, numerous rescues, and significant disruptions to infrastructure and utilities.
Emergency Rescues and Evacuations
In the past 24 hours, the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has responded to over 892 incidents, including 130 flood rescues, primarily in Taree, Wingham, and Glenthorne. One notable rescue involved a mother and her two-year-old son airlifted from their flooded Glenthorne home after seeking help via social media.
Evacuation orders are in place for several communities, including Dumaresq Island and low-lying areas of Taree, as the Manning and Gloucester rivers continue to rise.
Weather Outlook
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Weather Warning for the Mid North Coast and parts of the Northern Rivers, Northern Tablelands, and Hunter regions. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 60 and 100 mm are likely, with 24-hourly totals between 100 and 150 mm. Locally intense rainfall may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding.
