  • Australia Post Halts US Deliveries Following Trump Tariffs

At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Australia Post has announced it’s suspending parcel deliveries to the United States and Puerto Rico until further notice, blaming new US import rules introduced under President Donald Trump. The big change is the removal of the De Minimis exemption, which previously allowed goods under $US800 (about $1233) to enter the US without tariffs. Now, tariffs must be prepaid before an item even arrives, creating major headaches for postal services worldwide. From August 26, Australia Post won’t accept parcels bound for the US or Puerto Rico through Business Contract, MyPost Business or Retail channels. Letters, documents, and gifts under $US100 can still be sent, but everything else is on hold. Executive General Manager Gary Starr said the move was unavoidable. “We are disappointed we’ve had to take this action,” he said. “But due to the complex and rapidly evolving situation, a temporary partial suspension has been necessary so we can develop and implement a workable solution for our customers.” He added that Australia Post, like more than 190 postal providers globally, is scrambling to adjust to the new guidance from US Customs and Border Protection. The federal government also criticised the US tariffs, saying they would only end up hurting American families and small businesses. “The United States’ decision to remove exemptions for low-value imports is disappointing,” a government spokesperson said. “We’ll work with Australia Post to limit disruption for customers while ensuring compliance with the new requirements.” They added that the Albanese government will keep pushing for the removal of all tariffs on Australian exports, in line with the free trade agreement between the two countries. For now, though, Aussie businesses and individuals sending parcels to the US will need to sit tight until a solution is found. More updates to come on AusNewsLanka .

  • Everyday painkillers linked to a global health threat

At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. It turns out two of the most common painkillers found in almost every household — ibuprofen and paracetamol — may be making one of the world’s biggest health threats even worse: antibiotic resistance. The World Health Organisation has long warned that bacterial resistance is a major global health crisis, directly responsible for more than 1.27 million deaths in 2019. Now, new research from the University of South Australia has shown that everyday painkillers could be fuelling the problem. In a first-of-its-kind study, researchers found that both ibuprofen and paracetamol can drive antibiotic resistance on their own — and when taken together, they can actually make it worse. One of the clearest examples came when the drugs were combined with ciprofloxacin, a common broad-spectrum antibiotic, to treat E. coli. Instead of helping, the mix triggered more bacterial mutations, making the E. coli highly resistant not just to ciprofloxacin, but to several other antibiotics as well. “Worryingly, the bacteria were not only resistant to the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, but increased resistance was also observed to multiple other antibiotics from different classes,” lead researcher Associate Professor Rietie Venter explained. The study showed that the painkillers effectively activated the bacteria’s defences, helping them expel antibiotics and making treatments far less effective. The team also looked at other common medications like metformin (used for diabetes) and pseudoephedrine (a decongestant) and found similar warning signs. Their conclusion? Antibiotic resistance isn’t just about antibiotics anymore. Venter stressed that people shouldn’t suddenly stop using these everyday medications. Instead, the message is that doctors and researchers need to be more mindful of how common drugs interact with antibiotics — especially for vulnerable groups like aged care residents, who often take multiple medications daily. “Antibiotics have long been vital in treating infectious diseases, but their widespread overuse and misuse have driven a global rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria,” Venter said. “This research shows we need to start looking at the bigger picture of how all medicines may be contributing to the problem.” Stay tuned with Aus News Lanka  – the leading platform for news for Australians .

  • Australia Post Hiring 3500+ Workers Ahead of Christmas Rush

At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Australia Post is gearing up for one of its busiest times of the year, with plans to hire more than 3,500 extra workers ahead of Christmas. With major sales events like Black Friday just around the corner, the postal giant is looking for forklift operators, van and truck drivers, and parcel sorters to help handle the holiday rush. Victoria has the biggest need, with 1,000 roles up for grabs, while NSW and Queensland are each looking to fill around 900 positions. Australia Post’s Sue Davies said the extra seasonal workers are vital to keeping things moving. “Last year, we delivered almost 103 million parcels in the lead-up to Christmas, thanks to the help of our seasonal team members,” she said. “Our ability to deliver parcels quickly and reliably depends on the hard work and commitment of every individual we bring on board.” The company already employs about 64,000 people and has more than 4,000 locations across the country. In the 2024 financial year, it reported $9 billion in revenue. So if you’re looking for a short-term job over the festive season, Australia Post might just have a spot for you. • Australia set for a warmer and wetter spring

At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. If you’ve been hoping for a break from the rain, you might be out of luck. The Bureau of Meteorology says much of eastern Australia, including Sydney, is likely to stay wetter than usual right through spring. Between September and December, rainfall is expected to exceed the median across most of the east. Sydney, which has already seen record downpours this month, has a 65% chance of above-average rain in October alone. Some inland parts of NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory could see even more, with an 80% chance of wetter-than-usual conditions. For context, Sydney typically sees around 63–67mm of rain in September and October, rising to about 90mm in November. Daily minimums are usually in the single digits to low teens, with daytime highs around 24°C. But this year, it looks like the warmth will also be ramping up. The outlook shows both minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be above average across most of the country. In October, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane all have an 80% chance of warmer-than-normal conditions — and that trend should continue across the whole season. Not everywhere will be soaked or sweltering, though. Parts of southern Western Australia, including Perth, are actually tipped to have lower-than-usual rainfall and fewer temperature extremes over the coming months. So, in short — for the east coast, expect more wet weather mixed with warmer days. For the west, it could be a milder spring. • Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe remanded

This is a developing story brought to you by Aus News Lanka , your trusted source for news for Sri Lankans  in Australia and beyond. Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been remanded until August 26 after being arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The order came from Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura today, after Wickremesinghe was taken into custody when he showed up at the CID to give a statement. According to Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, the CID plans to present evidence against him under the Public Property Act. He argued that Wickremesinghe should remain in custody since the investigation is still ongoing. But Wickremesinghe’s lawyer, President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne, pushed for bail, saying there was no reason to keep him behind bars. The magistrate, however, rejected the bail request and ruled that the former President would stay remanded until later this month. The arrest stems from an investigation into Wickremesinghe’s September 2023 trip to London, where he attended a graduation ceremony for his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, at the University of Wolverhampton. The stopover happened while he was returning from Havana after attending the G77 summit. The CID alleges that government funds were used to cover what was essentially a private trip — including travel costs and security. Wickremesinghe, however, has insisted that his wife paid her own expenses and that no state money was misused. The case has been under investigation for some time, with earlier testimony taken from his former private secretary Sandra Perera and ex-Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake. For now, the former President remains in custody as the CID continues to build its case. Stay tuned with Aus News Lanka  – the leading platform for news for Sri Lankans .
