- Severe Winds to Batter Multiple Australian States and Territories
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Warnings for powerful winds across south-eastern Australia are still in place today after a chaotic weekend that left thousands without power. Melbourne copped it hardest on Sunday, with gusts bringing down trees, tearing roofs off homes, and leaving more than 3,000 properties in the dark. The SES says it received over 500 calls for help, mostly from the city’s north. In Heidelberg Heights, one home had its entire roof ripped off, while Melbourne Airport recorded gusts of more than 100km/h. Train passengers on the Upfield and Hurstbridge lines had to be shifted to replacement buses after debris blocked the tracks. While conditions have eased in western and central Victoria, the Bureau of Meteorology says damaging winds will hang around in the east until Tuesday. A severe weather warning is in place for eastern Victoria, with Gippsland bracing for gusts between 60km/h and 100km/h this morning — and alpine peaks could see blasts up to 115km/h. Similar warnings have also been issued for parts of southern NSW and the ACT, including the South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and South West Slopes. Further south, Tasmania is also on alert, with warnings covering multiple regions including the Western District, South East, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of the North East and North West. According to Weatherzone, the burst of warm air that whipped up the gale-force winds is making way for a cold front, expected to arrive tomorrow and finally bring some relief. - Apple TV+ Raises Subscription Prices for Australian Viewers
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Australians are about to feel another pinch on their streaming bills, with Apple TV+ becoming the latest platform to hike prices. The service, which launched back in 2019 for just $7.99 a month, is bumping up its monthly fee from $12.99 to $15.99 starting October 11. If you’re already subscribed, you’ll see the new price kick in 30 days after your next renewal. There is a bit of good news though — Apple’s yearly plan will stay at $129, which works out cheaper at about $10.75 a month. And if you’re on Apple One (the bundle that includes up to five other Apple services), those prices aren’t changing either. “The annual subscription price remains unchanged, as does pricing for Apple One, which is the easiest way to enjoy all of Apple's subscription services in one plan at the best value,” an Apple spokesperson confirmed. Apple isn’t the only one turning the screws on subscribers. Just last month, Netflix raised the cost of all three of its plans. The ad-supported tier jumped from $7.99 to $9.99, the standard plan without ads climbed from $18.99 to $20.99, and the premium package went from $25.99 to $28.99. Even adding an extra member to your plan got more expensive. Spotify also followed suit, lifting its monthly rates across the board. Students now pay $7.99 (up from $6.99), the individual plan rose from $13.99 to $15.99, the duo plan from $19.99 to $22.99, and the family plan leapt from $23.99 to $27.99. With more than a dozen local and international platforms now available in Australia, streaming prices span from around $7.99 a month to as much as $40 — and for many households juggling multiple subscriptions, the costs are really starting to stack up. - Australia’s First Climate Risk Report Warns of Deadly Heat and Rising Seas
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Australia’s first ever National Climate Risk Assessment (NCRA) has painted a grim picture of what’s ahead, warning that by 2050, around 1.5 million Australians could be at risk from sea level rise. The report shows that even a relatively modest 1.5°C of global warming could lift sea levels by 14 centimetres — enough to push far more coastal communities into danger zones. “By 2050, the number of coastal communities in high and very high-risk areas will jump from 8% to 18%,” the report says. “If populations stay the same, that’s 1.5 million people at risk.” And it doesn’t stop there. By 2090, as many as three million Australians could be exposed. The NCRA looked at three scenarios — 1.5°C, 2°C and 3°C of warming. Right now, the world is tracking closer to 2.9°C by 2030 — a level that would bring devastating impacts. Some of the predicted outcomes include: Heatwave deaths soaring by 444% in Sydney and 423% in Darwin. A surge in mosquito- and tick-borne diseases. More frequent category 4 and 5 cyclones. Large hail events along the east coast. Increased bushfire risk in forested areas, with more dangerous fire weather days in southern and eastern states. The report also flagged 63 nationally significant risks — ranging from threats to First Nations communities, to mental health challenges, infrastructure damage, and the loss of wildlife species. On the economic side, the costs are staggering. Property value losses could hit $611 billion by 2050, rising to $770 billion by 2090. Disaster costs from floods, bushfires, storms and cyclones could reach $40.3 billion every year under a moderate warming scenario. Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the report makes it clear that regional Australians will bear the brunt.
