This is a developing story brought to you by Aus News Lanka, your trusted source for news for Sri Lankans in Australia and beyond.

Australia Post is warning Australians to stay alert as new online scams target buyers and sellers on Facebook Marketplace.

Scammers are posing as genuine users and contacting people through Messenger. They send links or QR codes that lead to fake courier websites, claiming to arrange payment and delivery through Australia Post.

These sites are designed to steal personal and financial details.

Australia Post says the scams are becoming more advanced, driven by the rapid growth of online shopping. Australians spent $18.9 billion on online marketplaces last year, making them a key target for fraud.

Officials have stressed that Australia Post does not handle payments between buyers and sellers and is not linked to transactions on Facebook Marketplace.

So far this year, more than 2,500 Australians have reported being targeted by these scams.

Customers are urged to be cautious. Avoid clicking on unknown links, and only use the official Australia Post app to track deliveries.
