Parts of Victoria are enduring extreme temperatures, marking the hottest day since the 2009 Black Saturday fires. Several towns recorded temperatures above 48°C, while parts of Melbourne reached 45°C.
The heat is worsening already severe fire conditions. Authorities have declared extreme fire danger, warning of fast-moving and unpredictable blazes as a major wind change sweeps across the state.
Otways fire emergency
A large fire burning near Carlisle River has grown to about 10,500 hectares and remains out of control. Strong winds pushed flames closer to homes near Gellibrand on Tuesday evening, prompting urgent warnings.
Residents in Gellibrand, Barongarook, Barongarook West, Kawarren, Carlisle River, and Gerangamete have been told it is now too late to leave and to shelter indoors immediately.
Emergency crews have door-knocked more than 1,100 homes, with many residents evacuating. Some have stayed behind to defend properties. Authorities report a small number of homes may have been lost, with damage assessments to begin when safe.
Fire officials say containment lines are still holding, but intense heat and winds are expected to increase fire activity and smoke.
More fires across the state
Another blaze is burning out of control in Black Range State Park. People in Balmoral, Hynes, Kanagulk, Rocklands, and Telangatuk East are being urged to leave immediately while it is still safe.
Officials warn that extreme radiant heat alone can be fatal, even before flames arrive.
Statewide response
Emergency services are battling six major fires across Victoria, including serious incidents in Dargo, Walwa, and the Otways. Relief centres are open, with more than 120 people seeking shelter in Colac overnight.
A total fire ban remains in place, and temperatures above 40°C are forecast to continue in northern areas for several days.
Authorities are urging people to follow warnings, prioritise safety, and leave early if advised.
