Multiple states face flood warnings after heavy downpours

Flood warnings remain in place across Victoria, South Australia, southern New South Wales and the ACT after widespread heavy rain hit the region over the weekend.
Victoria recorded some of the heaviest falls, with more than 100mm of rain recorded at at least 13 locations in the 24 hours to Monday morning. Several areas of South Australia, NSW and the ACT also received more than 50mm.
The wet weather was followed by a cold front that brought strong winds and a sharp drop in temperatures. Wind gusts reached 130km/h at Thredbo and 120km/h at Mount Hotham.
The Bureau of Meteorology continues to monitor flooding, particularly across north-east and central Victoria. Warnings include areas around the Ovens, Goulburn, Yea and King rivers.
Strong winds are also affecting parts of the NSW coastline, including the Eden Coast and areas around Macquarie, Hunter, Illawarra and Batemans Bay.
Melbourne recorded 24.4mm of rain over the weekend, making it the city’s wettest day so far this year. Adelaide received 26.4mm, lifting its August rainfall total to 52mm, close to the long-term monthly average of 61mm.
In southern NSW, Thredbo recorded 84mm and Perisher Valley 61mm during the 24 hours to Monday morning.
Conditions are expected to become drier and colder through the rest of the week, although showers will continue in some areas.
Snowfall is also expected to remain heavy across the alpine regions of Victoria and NSW, providing a boost for ski resorts.
