Queenslanders are being urged to prepare for life-threatening flash flooding, with very heavy rain forecast across much of the state’s north in the coming days.
A severe weather warning covers a vast area from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the east coast. Forecasters say up to 260mm of rain could fall in just six hours, with South Mission Beach already recording close to 200mm overnight.
The highest flash-flood risk today is expected between Cairns and Townsville, while flood warnings are active for around 20 river catchments across North Queensland.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the system is similar to the 2019 floods, which caused widespread damage. Emergency services are now on standby.
A strengthening monsoon trough and low-pressure system is driving the rain and is forecast to affect communities including Cairns, Innisfail, Tully, Ingham, Mount Isa, Cloncurry and Burketown, among many others.
Some inland and western areas could see 300mm of rain by tomorrow, with totals possibly exceeding 600mm by mid-week. Four-day totals may even pass 700mm in parts of the state.
Already, 217mm has fallen at Cardwell Gap in 24 hours, making it the wettest location in Australia. The Gregory River is at major flood levels, with multiple flood warnings and watches now in place.
Meteorologists warn the rain could last for days, leading to road closures, community isolation, and impacts on agriculture and livestock, especially in remote areas.
Authorities urge residents and travellers to stay informed, avoid flooded roads, and prepare for prolonged disruptions as conditions continue to evolve.
