A major heatwave is set to sweep across eastern Australia this week, pushing temperatures above 40 degrees in several capital cities.
The extreme heat has built over Western Australia and is now moving east, according to Weatherzone. South Australia and Victoria are first in line, with Adelaide and Melbourne forecast to hit up to 41 degrees by Wednesday.
Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day for both cities. Adelaide may stay near 40 degrees again on Thursday as the hot air lingers. Melbourne will cool slightly after midweek but still faces hot conditions, with highs around 30 degrees on Thursday and 35 degrees on Friday.
Relief is on the way for Victoria, with cooler weather and showers forecast for the weekend. Sunday temperatures in Melbourne are expected to drop to around 21 degrees.
Adelaide will remain hotter for longer. Forecasts point to 39 degrees on Thursday and 38 degrees on Friday.
The heat will also reach New South Wales later in the week. Sydney is not expected to hit 40 degrees, but a four-day run of hot weather begins on Wednesday. Temperatures are set to peak at about 36 degrees on Saturday.
Showers are forecast for Sydney on Sunday, bringing cooler conditions and up to five millimetres of rain.
