Large areas of eastern Australia are set for a wet week, with widespread rain forecast across Queensland, New South Wales and parts of Victoria.
In tropical Queensland, the rain continues an already soggy pattern. Further south, it brings welcome relief after weeks of drier conditions.
Central Queensland has already seen intense falls. Towns around Mackay, the Whitsundays and inland centres such as Clermont recorded more than 200mm in 24 hours. Mackay Airport also logged heavy rain after a wet weekend. Forecasters say the rain is being driven by moist tropical air linked to the remnants of former Tropical Cyclone Koji.
Rain is expected to push south into Brisbane, possibly lasting into Tuesday. Along the NSW coast, light rain is falling early this week, with heavier falls likely from Thursday into the weekend as a coastal low develops. Sydney is on track for its first decent summer soaking after an unusually dry December.
A broad band of thunderstorms is also forecast on Thursday. Storms could stretch across much of Queensland, eastern NSW and parts of Victoria, fuelled by humid air and unstable conditions. Inland NSW could see storms develop in hot conditions, with temperatures nearing 40 degrees in places like Dubbo.
For Victoria, rainfall totals remain uncertain. East Gippsland is likely to see moderate falls later in the week, while fire-affected areas in central, western and northeastern parts of the state may only receive light rain.
