Cabinet Approves Rs. 700 Million Hamilton Canal Tourism Project

The Cabinet has approved a Rs. 700 million project to develop the Hamilton Canal and its surrounding aquatic environment as a tourism destination.
The initiative aims to promote nature-based and heritage tourism by improving coastal and marine attractions across the Western Province, including the Negombo Lagoon and Hamilton Canal.
Under the proposed plan, the Hamilton Canal will be developed from the Queen's Island Jetty in the Negombo Lagoon to the mouth of the Ma Oya estuary. The project is expected to make better use of the historic waterway for tourism activities.
The Western Provincial Council has already prepared a project report outlining the proposed development work.
The Cabinet approval was granted following a joint proposal submitted by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
The Rs. 700 million investment is expected to support the development of the region's natural and historical attractions while creating new opportunities for tourism.
