Ballarat North Suburb Approved for 13,000 Residents

The Victorian Government has approved plans for a new suburb in Ballarat, expected to accommodate around 13,000 residents.
The 832-hectare development will be built on rezoned farmland near Mount Rowan and Miners Rest, north of the Western Freeway. It is located about eight kilometres north of Ballarat’s CBD and 105 kilometres from Melbourne.
The new suburb, known as Ballarat North, is a priority project under the Victorian Government’s Housing Statement 2024–2034. It is expected to be formally gazetted in the coming days.
Plans include almost 6,000 homes, four schools, a neighbourhood centre and extensive green spaces. The development will also feature two sports reserves and 7.5 hectares of parkland.
Ballarat Mayor Tracey Hargreaves welcomed the approval, describing it as an important milestone for the city.
She said the project would support Ballarat’s economic growth, create jobs during construction and provide further employment opportunities as the community develops.
An estimated $164 million will be invested in infrastructure, including transport, recreation and community facilities.
Ballarat City Council also plans to begin work on a nearby housing development north of Cummins Road, which could deliver an additional 2,600 homes.
Ballarat, the third-largest city in regional Victoria, has a population of 113,763.
