Bird flu has been detected at a second property in northern Victoria, just days after the highly contagious H7N8 strain was found at a nearby farm in Euroa. Authorities say this latest case wasn’t unexpected, and they’re ramping up urgent testing to track down any further outbreaks. The confirmed strain is the same one detected in New South Wales and the ACT last year, but officials have made it clear this is a separate outbreak. It’s also different from the strains that swept through farms in Victoria’s south-west in 2024, in what became Australia's worst bird flu crisis—wiping out 1.3 million birds. Acting Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Cameron Bell explained that the second property was already on their radar as a high-priority site. “There are known connections between the properties, which helped us identify high-risk areas for early testing, even before we suspected disease,” he said. As a precaution, strict movement restrictions are now in place. The controlled area covers towns including Euroa, Violet Town, Longwood, Ruffy, Avenel, and Strathbogie. Farmers and workers in these zones can’t move birds, eggs, manure, or equipment without a permit—even selling or giving away eggs is off-limits. Producers with more than 50 poultry in restricted areas must now house their birds to limit exposure. Bell reassured the public that while this strain is serious, it’s not the same as the H5N1 bird flu strain currently spreading overseas and affecting wildlife. WA commuters hoping to tap on with their phones or credit cards for public transport will have to wait even longer—again. The long-promised upgrade is now 18 months behind schedule, with yet another delay pushing it back to the end of this year. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti had set a mid-year target for the rollout, already a year late, but Premier Roger Cook admitted this week that the project has blown out even further. The issue? Installing payment machines on buses. So far, only 400 of the 1750-strong fleet have been fitted with the new tech. Donald Trump’s top trade adviser has taken a swipe at Australia, accusing it of “killing” the US aluminium market—just as the Aussie government was hoping for an exemption from the president’s hefty new tariffs. Trump officially signed off on a 25% tariff on steel and aluminium imports, saying it was all about boosting local US industry. The move came right after a phone call with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who had been pushing for Australia to be spared. Albanese said Trump had promised to give “consideration” to an exemption. But just hours later, speaking at the White House, Trump seemed to shut the door on that idea, declaring there would be “no exceptions.” Still, when pressed about Australia, he softened a little, saying he’d give it “great consideration” and even called Albanese a “very fine man.” But Trump’s trade team wasn’t holding back. “Australia is just killing our aluminium market,” Trump said, claiming that after Joe Biden’s previous agreement to limit exports, Australia had flooded the US with aluminium anyway. He pointed out that while the US aluminium industry is struggling at 50% capacity, Australia’s is sitting at a much healthier 90%. The official tariff proclamation from the White House doubled down on the criticism, accusing Australia of ignoring its “verbal commitment” to keep exports at a reasonable level. It even claimed that in 2024, Aussie aluminium imports into the US had surged by a massive 103% compared to previous years. The federal government has promised to step in and take over Rex Airlines  if no buyer comes forward to save the struggling regional carrier. A Lifeline for Regional Aussies Rex Airlines has been fighting to stay afloat  ever since it went into voluntary administration  on June 30 last year , with administrators Ernst & Young (EY)  working to secure its future. But now, the government says if all else fails, it’s ready to step in —marking the first time a federal takeover of an airline has happened since Qantas was privatized in the 1990s . Prime Minister Anthony Albanese  says Rex is too important to lose : “Regional Australians deserve access to quality and crucial regional aviation services.” The government is working closely  with Rex’s administrators to make sure flights continue beyond June 2025 , either through a successful sale or government support . What Happens Next? The government is not actively bidding  but will work with potential buyers  to help complete a sale. EY has five months left  to find a commercial solution, with the voluntary administration extended until June 30 . The government has already pledged up to $80 million  to keep Rex’s regional routes running during the process. What Has Rex Sold So Far? To try and stay afloat, Rex has sold its ambulance business, Pel-Air, to Toll for $47 million , and other asset sales are ongoing . Meanwhile, former employees have been granted early access  to their entitlements, with 306 claims received so far —and $7.1 million already paid out . Will Rex Be Saved? It’s still uncertain whether a private buyer will step in , but the government is making it clear: Rex isn’t going anywhere without a fight . The Greens are making another big push to tax Australia’s billionaires —and they say it’s all about funding essential public services  like Medicare, cheaper public transport, and better bulk-billing access for GPs. Their plan? A 10% annual tax  on the 150 billionaires  in Australia, which they claim would generate $23 billion  in just a few years and $50 billion over a decade . The party has branded it a Robin Hood tax , aiming to take from the ultra-rich to support everyday Australians. With a federal election looming, Greens leader Adam Bandt  says this is a “once-in-a-generation chance”  to rein in the $584.5 billion  that Australia’s wealthiest people have accumulated over the past six years. "In a wealthy country like ours, everyone should be able to afford the basics—a home, food, and world-class healthcare and education," Bandt said. "Instead, billionaires are making out like bandits while everyone else is being squeezed. It’s time we turned the tables." The Greens are hoping to gain more influence in a possible minority government , and if that happens, they’ll push hard to make billionaires “pay their fair share.” Billionaires in the Firing Line Greens economic justice spokesperson Nick McKim  didn’t hold back, singling out mining magnate Gina Rinehart —Australia’s richest person. "There has been an obscene accumulation of wealth  in this country in recent years," he said. "Gina Rinehart should not have $40.6 billion  while people are sleeping in tents and cars. That’s the economic system that Labor and the Liberals are defending." McKim says the tax would help turn things around , ensuring billionaires "start giving back." Could the Plan Actually Happen? The Greens have pushed for similar taxes before. In 2022 , they proposed an extra 6% billionaire tax  to help tackle housing affordability. And back in 2010 , under Julia Gillard’s Labor minority government, they successfully added children’s dental care to Medicare —a key win for the party. But, as with any big tax plan, there are critics. Some argue that billionaires could find ways to dodge the tax , either by under-reporting earnings or donating to charity to offset their payments. With recent polls suggesting Australia could be heading for a minority government , the Greens are looking to leverage their influence . According to the Australian Financial Review , the Coalition has been gaining ground, jumping from 57 to 67 seats , while Labor could drop from 78 to 71 . With 29% of voters last year tipping a Coalition-led minority government , it’s shaping up to be a tight race—and the Greens are ready to make their billionaire tax a key bargaining chip.
