But while the rain was a welcome start to winter, experts say a lot more is needed to really help regional areas bounce back after months of record dry. According to Weatherzone, a low-pressure system teamed up with a series of cold fronts, bringing multiple rounds of rain and even snow to parts of Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and southern New South Wales. Over five days, rainfall totals landed around 20mm to 50mm in many of those regions, with some places seeing even heavier falls. The standout was Mount Sabine in Victoria’s Otway Ranges, which copped a whopping 130mm in just 48 hours. It was a much-needed drink for areas that have been parched all year. Farmers, many of whom have been doing it tough and calling for drought support, finally got some relief. But the big picture is still pretty grim. So far in 2025, rain totals are sitting more than 50mm below average in large parts of SA, Victoria, and Tassie. Some areas in Victoria are 200mm below average, while in Tasmania, it’s as bad as 400mm. So while this rain was definitely a step in the right direction, it’s just the beginning. “Southern and south-eastern Australia will need to see more healthy rain-bearing systems this winter to reduce or wipe out the longer-term rainfall deficiencies,” said Weatherzone. A new iSelect survey has revealed that a whopping seven out of ten Australians admit to calling in sick when they’re totally fine. And all those cheeky days off are costing businesses a massive $7.3 billion a year in lost productivity, adding up to 24.6 million sick days across the country. Even if you take mental health days out of the picture, 68% of people still say they’ve faked being sick to get a day off. So what’s behind the fake coughs and “can’t-get-out-of-bed” texts? The top reason? Lack of sleep. About one in three people said they called in sick last year just because they were exhausted. Following that, 27% said they just wanted to relax and recharge, and 23.1% took a mental health day — even if they didn’t feel comfortable being upfront about it. The survey also showed a few interesting gender differences: Women were more likely to take time off for mental health reasons (26.6% compared to 19.5% of men). They were also more likely to call in sick to care for family or kids (20.1% vs 16.3% of men). That blast of icy air sweeping across south-eastern Australia is pushing even further north this week, and Queensland is next in line. Over the weekend, it was Victoria, NSW, Tasmania, and South Australia that shivered through frigid winds, frosty mornings, and even snowfall. Now, the cold snap is climbing its way up into northern and eastern Queensland, and it’s sticking around for most of the week. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, it’s all thanks to a low pressure system in the Tasman Sea teaming up with a high over the Great Australian Bight. The combo is sending a surge of cold, south-westerly air right over Queensland. “The cold weather that was across south-eastern Australia on the weekend is being driven well up to northern and eastern parts today,” explained senior meteorologist Dean Narramore. What to Expect: Brisbane will shiver through minimums of 9°C and tops of around 19°C through to Friday, before things warm up slightly on the weekend. In Ipswich, things get even colder, with temperatures expected to dip to just 4°C at night. Expect morning frost across inland areas of Queensland and northern NSW. Sydney will barely make it past 18°C tomorrow, and nighttime temps will stay in the single digits all week. Western NSW will really feel the chill, with Wagga Wagga heading for a low of just 2°C by Thursday and Thredbo plunging to -6°C. Gale warnings are in place from the Macquarie Coast to the Eden Coast, so it’ll be blustery too. And yes — the snow is still falling. The Alpine regions copped 40 to 60 centimetres over the weekend, and even the Northern Tablelands in NSW saw fresh snow this morning.
