A severe heatwave is sweeping across south-eastern Australia, with temperatures set to surge past 40 degrees in several cities and regions this week.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the heat could be the most intense since the Black Summer bushfires of 2019–20. Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia are all bracing for days of extreme heat, dry conditions and strong winds.
Victoria
Large parts of the state are under total fire bans, including Bendigo, Echuca, Rochester and Shepparton. Some towns are forecast to reach the mid-40s. Ouyen could hit 46 degrees, while Shepparton may reach 44 degrees.
Melbourne is also in for dangerous heat, with temperatures expected to peak at 41 degrees tomorrow and climb again to around 40 degrees on Friday. Fire warnings are active in the north-east and Upper Murray regions.
New South Wales
Sydney is facing several days in the mid-30s, with Saturday shaping up as the hottest day at around 39 degrees. Inland areas may approach 40 degrees. Severe heatwave warnings are in place across multiple regions, with high fire danger expected through to Friday.
South Australia
Adelaide is set for back-to-back 40-degree days after today’s high of 38 degrees. Port Augusta and surrounding areas are forecast to endure several days of extreme heat, with temperatures in the mid-40s. A cool change is expected over the weekend.
Authorities warn fire danger will increase as the heat peaks and urge people to stay informed, avoid risky activities and follow fire restrictions.
