Large parts of South Australia are sweating through a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring into the 40s as the weekend approaches.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe heatwave warning for the North West and North East Pastoral districts.
Adelaide is tipped to reach 37°C, while outback regions will climb even higher. Roxby Downs is forecast to hit 44°C, Marree 45°C, and both Coober Pedy and Port Augusta around 43°C. Overnight temperatures will stay uncomfortably warm, remaining in the high 20s.
Senior meteorologist Jonathon How said hot northerly winds are pushing temperatures well above average as the week ends.
A trough is expected to sweep across the state on Friday, bringing raised dust in western areas. A cooler change will begin to move in from the southwest over the weekend, with high pressure settling south of the Bight by Monday.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms may develop in the state’s northeast, but the cool change will be gusty — increasing extreme fire danger, particularly across the Eyre Peninsula.
Hot, dry and windy conditions on Friday will keep fire risks elevated statewide.
