Over Saturday and Sunday, almost a month’s worth of rain dumped on the city, making it the wettest August weekend since 1998, according to Weatherzone.
In total, just over 80mm fell — more than the entire month’s usual rainfall — and when you add Monday morning’s 16.6mm, the total for the first eight days of August shoots up to 194.8mm. That’s more than double the monthly average and the wettest start to August in 27 years (and the 5th wettest on record in 168 years!).
Forecasters say abnormally warm sea surface temperatures are partly to blame. In fact, Sydney has had only one fully dry day this month — so far.
The soggy spell isn’t over just yet, with showers expected to hang around until Thursday. The sun should make a comeback then, but don’t put away your umbrella — rain might be back on Saturday.
Elsewhere in Australia:
Melbourne: Showers tomorrow after a dry day today.
Perth: Sunny now, but showers midweek.
Adelaide: Rain tomorrow, sunshine to follow.
Canberra: Frosty nights down to -1°C, sunny days ahead.
Brisbane: Cloudy all week, around 23°C.
Cairns: Warm at 27°C with some showers.
It’s safe to say August has decided to go all-in on the rain for Sydney!
