Little-known Australian travel charge set to rise again soon

Australians and international visitors will soon pay more to leave the country, with the federal government increasing the Passenger Movement Charge from $70 to $80 from January 2027.
The extra $10 fee, announced in the federal budget, will apply to all travellers departing Australia by air or sea, regardless of when their ticket was purchased.
The government expects the change to raise an additional $755 million over five years.
Tourism and travel groups have criticised the increase, warning it could add more pressure to travellers already facing higher airfare costs linked to rising global fuel prices.
Industry leaders say Australia already has one of the world’s highest departure taxes and fear the move could hurt tourism and cruise travel.
The government argues the increase is unlikely to reduce visitor numbers and says it remains committed to improving border and airport systems.
Experts are also calling for faster modernisation at airports, including replacing paper incoming passenger cards with digital systems already being trialled on selected international flights.
