Australia moves closer to a future of ultra-low-cost solar energy

Australia is making strong progress in developing ultra low-cost solar technology, but a new report says the biggest challenge is now building large-scale solar projects faster and more efficiently.
The latest Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) report says cheaper solar power could help drive new industries such as green metals and clean fuels, while lowering the cost of renewable electricity.
ARENA Chief Executive Darren Miller said future success depends not only on improving solar technology but also on speeding up construction, financing and grid connections for major solar projects.
The report highlights several ARENA-backed innovations already helping the sector. These include modular solar systems, automated construction equipment and robotic installation technologies that reduce build times, improve safety and increase efficiency.
However, the report also points to ongoing challenges, including labour shortages, rising construction costs, investment pressures and delays in connecting projects to the electricity grid.
ARENA says continued investment in innovative projects will help turn new ideas into large-scale commercial solutions and support Australia's clean energy transition.
The agency believes the coming years will be crucial in transforming Australia's solar innovation into a globally competitive industry and delivering lower-cost renewable energy for the future.
