The Eta Aquarids meteor shower is putting on its big performance this week, and if you’re lucky (and a little patient), you could catch up to 50 meteors an hour lighting up the night sky. According to NASA, this is one of the year’s best meteor showers — and here in the Southern Hemisphere, we’ve got front-row seats.
When and how do you see it?
The Eta Aquarids (yep, also spelled Aquariids) happen every year between April 19 and May 28, but the real peak is coming up early on May 6 and May 7, around 2am AEST.
Here’s how to catch the best view:
Head somewhere dark and away from city lights — the less light pollution, the better.
Look towards the eastern horizon, just above it.
Give your eyes at least 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness.
Watch for bright flashes or streaks of light across the sky — some might even leave glowing trails for a few seconds or even minutes.
And yep, feel free to make a wish when you see one (or 50).
Oh, and dress warmly! Those early hours can get chilly.
Can’t make it? There’s another chance…
If you miss the Eta Aquarids, don’t stress — your next chance at a sky show is in August, with the Perseids meteor shower peaking on August 12 and 13. It’s more of a Northern Hemisphere event, but you still might catch a few streaks here in Australia.
So, set your alarm, grab a blanket, and enjoy the magic of the universe doing its thing. Happy stargazing!
