Several parts of Australia are bracing for intense heat over the coming days as heatwave conditions spread nationwide.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for parts of New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland and the ACT.
New South Wales is expected to be the worst affected. Extreme heat is forecast for the Mid North Coast, Illawarra, South Coast and Snowy Mountains. Severe conditions are also likely across much of the state’s east and north. Sydney is set to reach 36°C today, while some inland areas could climb into the low 40s.
Victoria’s northern regions are also facing severe heat, with warnings in place for the Northern Country, North East, North Central and Gippsland districts. Cooler air is expected to arrive over the weekend, bringing relief to Victoria and southern NSW.
The heat will then shift north. Northern NSW and south-east Queensland are forecast to heat up over the weekend, with Brisbane tipped to hit 36°C on Monday. High temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s are expected to linger into mid next week.
In Western Australia, severe heat has eased across most areas but continues today in the Pilbara and Eucla.
Adelaide will see cooler conditions today, with south-westerly winds keeping temperatures around 30°C after yesterday’s scorching 40°C.
