El Niño drives worst Australian snow season in a decade so far

Australia’s ski season has begun on a disappointing note, with some alpine regions recording their lowest mid-June snow levels in more than 10 years.
At Spencers Creek near Mount Kosciuszko, snow depth has fallen to zero, matching the poorest start to the season since 2016.
Victorian resorts, including Mount Buller, are also experiencing below-average snowfall as warmer-than-usual conditions linked to El Niño continue to affect Australia's alpine regions.
Forecasters say some light snow is possible over the weekend, but it is unlikely to provide a strong start to the ski season ahead of the school holiday period.
There is some positive news, however. Colder and drier weather is expected in the coming weeks, creating better conditions for snowmaking operations at ski resorts.
While the season has started slowly, experts say there is still time for conditions to improve if significant snowfall arrives during July.
For now, the outlook remains challenging, but hopes remain that a stronger second half of winter can help rescue the 2026 snow season.
