Earth has recorded its highest temperature in 125,000 years, according to the 2025 State of the Climate Report, with scientists warning that the planet’s “vital signs” are under extreme stress.
The report found record losses in forest cover, soaring fossil fuel use, and unprecedented ocean heat. In 2024, the planet’s average temperature was more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, crossing a critical climate threshold.
Co-author Professor Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick from the Australian National University said the findings show an urgent need for real climate action in Australia and beyond.
“Every fraction of a degree we prevent will help avoid a worse disaster,” she said. “If we don’t act now, we risk overwhelming our emergency services, economy, and communities.”
The report outlines several key solutions to curb global warming and keep temperature rises below 2°C — including reforestation, cutting food waste, phasing out fossil fuels, improving refrigeration systems, and better family planning.
Perkins-Kirkpatrick warned that without bold action, heatwaves will grow longer, hotter, and deadlier, pushing human health and infrastructure to breaking point.
“The science is clear — the tools to fix this exist,” she said. “But the window to act is closing fast.”
