Cyclone Narelle may reach Perth in rare southward track

Residents in Perth and the south-west are being urged to stay alert as ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is expected to strengthen again over open waters.
The system has already caused heavy rain and flooding across the Northern Territory and the Kimberley. It was last tracked as a tropical low near Wadeye after crossing the coast as a category 3 cyclone.
Forecasters say the system will move offshore and redevelop into a tropical cyclone midweek. It could reach category 2 or 3 by Wednesday and strengthen further to a severe category 4 system by Thursday. There is also a chance it could reach category 5 strength.
As it tracks west, the system is expected to pass north of the Pilbara before potentially turning south later in the week.
By the weekend, weather models show it could move closer to the coast, with possible impacts between Carnarvon and Geraldton. Some scenarios suggest it could track further south and affect Perth and the south-west by Sunday.
Even if it weakens or changes structure, the system could still bring damaging winds, heavy rain and large waves.
Cyclones reaching Perth are rare but not unheard of. Authorities say residents should monitor updates closely as the system’s path remains uncertain.
