Australian businesses are becoming more cautious about hiring as economic pressure and rising costs continue to weigh on employers.
New research from Employment Hero shows job growth stalled in April, with overall employment slipping slightly after three months of steady gains.
At the same time, casual work is rising rapidly, increasing 11 per cent over the past year more than double the pace of full-time employment growth.
The report, based on payroll data from more than 23,000 businesses and 1.7 million workers, suggests many employers are choosing flexible staffing options while managing costs.
Despite slower hiring, annual employment growth remains strong at 8.4 per cent.
Wages also continued to rise, recording their biggest monthly jump in more than six months. Median hourly pay across Australia now sits at $46.30.
Industry experts say businesses are trying to balance higher wage costs with the need to attract and retain staff in a challenging economic environment.
