Australians warned about travelling through major Middle Eastern airport hub

Australians have been urged to avoid travelling through King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, following recent security incidents that have disrupted airport operations.
Australia’s Smartraveller service issued a “Do not travel” warning for the airport on Monday after two reported attacks raised security concerns.
The updated advice tells travellers to confirm their flights with airlines or travel providers before heading to the airport. Australians have also been advised to reconsider travel to other airports in Saudi Arabia and follow instructions from local authorities and airport staff.
Smartraveller continues to recommend reconsidering the need to travel to Saudi Arabia overall because of the security situation.
The warning comes after Australia recently eased its travel advice for two major Middle Eastern transit hubs. On Thursday, the advice for the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and Qatar was lowered to Level 2, advising travellers to exercise a high degree of caution.
Both countries had previously faced higher-level warnings during the escalation of the Middle East conflict, including advice against travel and airport transit.
Although there are no direct flights between Australia and Saudi Arabia, the kingdom attracts millions of international visitors each year, including Muslim pilgrims travelling to Mecca.
Australian authorities have stressed that conditions across the Middle East remain unpredictable and that travel advice can change at short notice. Travellers are encouraged to check Smartraveller updates and confirm flight arrangements before departing.
