New population data shows migration remains the main driver of Australia’s growth, sparking renewed debate over intake levels.
Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal that net overseas migration reached 87,821 in the September 2025 quarter. If this pace continues, annual migration could again exceed 300,000 for a fourth straight year.
The data also shows:
Migration made up 79% of population growth during the quarter
Natural population increase accounted for just 21%
Intake levels remain well above historical averages
The Institute of Public Affairs says the figures highlight ongoing pressure on the migration system. Deputy Executive Director Daniel Wild said current levels remain high despite claims they are easing.
Recent research from the group suggests:
60% of Australians believe migration levels are too high
79% support reducing annual intake below 100,000
The debate continues as policymakers balance economic needs with community concerns about infrastructure, housing, and long-term planning.
