Northern California had a nerve-rattling start when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast near Petrolia. The quake hit at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers, causing significant tremors that were felt as far south as San Francisco, where residents described a rolling motion lasting several seconds.
Initially, a tsunami warning was issued, stretching from Dunes City in Oregon all the way down to San Francisco and San Jose, California. Phones buzzed with urgent alerts from the National Weather Service, warning people to move to higher ground immediately due to the risk of powerful waves and strong currents.
In Berkeley, police issued evacuation orders for parts of the city near San Francisco Bay. Even the San Francisco Zoo evacuated its animals and staff to higher ground as a precaution. Thankfully, the tsunami warning was later cancelled, easing fears for the region's coastline communities.
Despite the cancellation, it was a tense morning for many. Aftershocks followed the main quake, keeping residents on edge. While there were no immediate reports of significant damage, the quake served as a stark reminder of the region's seismic activity.
Authorities are urging residents to stay alert and keep updated on safety protocols in case of future activity. For now, Northern Californians can breathe a cautious sigh of relief.
