Donald Trump’s latest move on trade has ruffled some serious feathers in Washington, with one top US politician calling it an “insult” to Australia. Democratic congressman Joe Courtney didn’t hold back, slamming Trump’s decision to slap a 25% tariff on Australian steel and aluminium. And his frustration isn’t just about the numbers—it’s about the timing. On Friday, Australia handed over a hefty $798 million  to the US as part of the AUKUS deal for nuclear-powered submarines. Then, just two days later, Trump signed off on a tariff that directly hits Aussie exports. Courtney, who plays a key role on the powerful Armed Services Committee, made his feelings clear. "The first cheque was delivered on Friday … and two days later, what do we see? A 25 per cent tariff on steel and all products coming from Australia into the US,” he said. "What we're seeing is a completely needless, almost insult, to the people of Australia." Now, there’s a chance Australia could be let off the hook. After a phone call with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese , Trump has said an exemption is “under consideration.” Albanese described their chat as “very constructive and warm” , and pointed out that the US actually benefits from trade with Australia, with a surplus that’s been in place since the Truman administration . Still, Trump didn’t waste any time—despite the conversation, he went ahead and signed the blanket tariff on all imported steel and aluminium. The stakes are high for Australia. Each year, we send about $500 million worth of aluminium  and $600 million worth of iron and steel  to the US. And beyond that, Trump’s move could have an even bigger indirect impact  on Aussie iron ore exports—our largest industry—if it disrupts global steel production. That said, Innes Willox , CEO of the Australian Industry Group, remains hopeful that Australia will score an exemption. "We're a big trading partner with the US, we have a huge security relationship, and a free trade deal in place," he told Today . "All of this puts us on solid footing to get exempted here. But... we’re dealing with the new President Trump." This phone call between Albanese and Trump was the first time they’ve spoken in three months. Now, all eyes are on whether Australia will get a pass—or if this tariff is here to stay.

Good news for Aussies who rely on in-person banking—Australia Post has locked in fresh deals with three major banks to keep Bank@Post running across the country. Commonwealth Bank, NAB, and Westpac have all signed updated agreements to continue offering basic banking services at 3,400 Australia Post offices, especially in rural and vulnerable communities. Together, these banks fork out nearly $90 million a year to make this happen. And there’s more on the way—Australia Post says talks with ANZ are in the "advanced stage," with a deal expected to roll out by October 2025. Macquarie Bank and HSBC have also jumped into discussions. So, what’s changing? Australia Post says the new agreements will introduce "standardised services" across the board, making banking more consistent for customers. "This helps put Bank@Post on a stronger financial footing so we can keep delivering essential banking services—especially in communities where there are no other options," said Australia Post CEO Paul Graham. The deal is also great news for the thousands of Licensed Post Offices, many of which are small, family-run businesses. Angela Mitchell, from Australia Post’s Licensee Representative Council, reinforced how crucial these services are, especially for remote communities with limited access to cash. "We know how important Bank@Post is for our customers, and we're committed to keeping it running," she said. This all comes as major banks have agreed to extend a ban on branch closures until 2027—a win for regional Aussies who still prefer face-to-face banking. "This is a big commitment to keeping regional branches open," said Anna Bligh, CEO of the Australian Banking Association (ABA). "While more people are shifting to digital banking, banks understand that some customers still prefer in-person services, and they’re making sure those options stay available." A new Finder survey of just over 1000 Aussies found that 10% of people have lied about their income—roughly two million people nationwide! And who are they lying to? Well, almost half (49%) admitted fibbing to a friend, a third (34%) have misled a family member, and one in five (21%) even kept the truth from their romantic partner. Some people also take it a step further—27% admitted to exaggerating their salary to a potential employer, and 10% even fudged the numbers on financial applications. So, why do people do it? Finder’s head of consumer research, Graham Cooke, says it usually comes down to societal pressure, personal insecurities, or just strategic thinking. "Some people feel like earning more makes them seem more successful or valuable," he explains. "And job seekers sometimes use it to try and negotiate a better salary." Then there’s the financial side of things—people might inflate their income on loan or credit card applications to qualify for things they otherwise wouldn’t. But Cooke warns that this can backfire in a big way. “Not only can it lead to your application being denied, but it could also damage your credit score and even have legal consequences,” he says. When it comes to who’s most likely to lie, Gen Z leads the way (15%), followed by Millennials (11%) and Gen X (9%). And interestingly, women (11%) are slightly more likely than men (9%) to fudge the numbers. But when men do lie, they tend to do it in different ways—they're more likely than women to exaggerate their income to a prospective employer (31% vs. 23%) or a romantic partner (24% vs. 17%). And when it comes to financial applications, men are way more likely to bend the truth—18% admit to it, compared to just 4% of women. At the end of the day, financial honesty matters—especially in relationships. “Lying about money can damage trust and make it harder to have open conversations about finances,” Cooke says. That said, you’re not obligated to tell people your salary if you don’t want to. Your finances are your business—just be careful where you choose to blur the lines!

Sydney has been absolutely smashed by storms , with a massive 52mm of rain  dumping down in just 90 minutes  over the CBD. The east coast was hit hard by a powerful rain bomb , bringing flash floods, huge hailstones, and destructive winds  across New South Wales. Sydney Turns Into a Waterlogged Mess The Bureau of Meteorology  had warned that Wednesday would be an "unsettled" day —and they weren’t wrong. Thunderstorms rolled in, soaking parts of the Inner West, CBD, and eastern suburbs . Some of the worst-hit areas included: Horsley Park  – 77.6mm of rain in just one hour Strathfield & Parramatta  – Roads turned into rivers, causing traffic chaos Riverstone  – Knee-high floodwaters The wild weather wasn’t just limited to Sydney. Wollongong, Goulburn, Wagga Wagga, Mudgee, and Orange  all copped the brunt of the storms. Hailstorm Turns NSW Town Into an Ice Rink Over in Harden , about 125km from Canberra , the town was slammed by extra-large hailstones  during a sudden flash storm. The roads looked like a winter wonderland , covered in sleet, with trucks brought in to clear the ice. Local councillor Michelle Gallo  described the damage: "Most shops are severely water-damaged, our post office has smashed windows and leaks everywhere." More Storms Coming? The NSW SES  is urging people in Liverpool, Fairfield, Penrith, Camden, and Parramatta  to stay indoors  as heavy rain continues. So far, Mount Palmers has seen 45mm  of rain, while Goulburn has had 28mm . And while tomorrow is expected to be a little calmer , meteorologist Miriam Bradbury  warns that storms aren’t done yet . A Sydney snake catcher got way more than he bargained for when he was called out to check a mulch pile  in the city's west. The team at Reptile Relocation Sydney  had been asked to remove a few red-bellied black snakes  spotted slithering in and out of a woodpile in Horsley Park . The homeowners had seen a couple of them over the past two weeks, which isn’t unusual—especially since female snakes sometimes gather in the same spot to give birth. What They Expected vs. What They Found Snake catcher Dylan figured he’d be dealing with about four  snakes. But within minutes of digging around, he realized this was no ordinary job. "Snake after snake, they just kept being uncovered,"  the team wrote on Facebook. By the end of it, Dylan had pulled out a jaw-dropping 102 snakes —including 97 baby red-bellied black snakes  and five adults . Yep, 102 snakes . Let that sink in. How Dangerous Are Red-Bellied Black Snakes? While these snakes are venomous, they’re generally not aggressive unless provoked. Bites do happen, but fatalities are extremely rare —though that doesn’t mean you should try to handle one (let alone 100!). The best move? Call a professional snake catcher  if you ever find one hanging around your backyard. Because as this story proves, you never know how many might be hiding beneath the surface!

රට ඩිජිටල් සමාජයක් බවට පත්කිරීමේ සුවිශේෂී පියවරක් තබමින් නව ඩිජිටල් වැඩසටහන් තුනක් හඳුන්වාදීම ජනාධිපති අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක මහතාගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් අද (07) පෙරවරුවේ ජනාධිපති කාර්යාලයේදී සිදු කෙරේ. රජයේ සියලුම ගෙවීම් ඩිජිටල්කරණය කිරීම සඳහා ‘GovPay’ වේදිකාව දියත් කිරීම, කොළඹ ප්‍රධාන කාර්යාලයේ සිට ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම් කාර්යාල මට්ටම දක්වා ජනාධිපති අරමුදලේ සේවාවන් ව්‍යාප්ත කිරීම, විද්‍යුත් උප්පැන්න, විවාහ සහ මරණ සහතික (EBMD) පහසුකම හඳුන්වාදීම, විදේශයන්හි සිටින ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන්ට උප්පැන්න, මරණ සහතිකය, උප්පැන්න සහතිකය, පිටපත් කිරීම සඳහා පහසුකම් සැලසීම මෙම මුලපිරීම්වලට ඇතුළත් වේ. ශ්‍රී ලංකා රාජ්‍ය තාන්ත්‍රික දූත මණ්ඩලවල. මෙම සේවාවන් හෙට සිට ලබා ගත හැක. මේ පිළිබඳ මාධ්‍ය හමුවක් ජනාධිපති මාධ්‍ය මධ්‍යස්ථානයේ දී (PMC) පැවැත්විණි. ඒ සඳහා ඩිජිටල් ආර්ථිකය පිළිබඳ නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍ය ඉංජිනේරු එරංග වීරරත්න මහතා ද සහභාගි විය. මෙම සැසිවාරය සඳහා ජනාධිපති අරමුදලේ ලේකම් සහ ජනාධිපති ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨ අතිරේක ලේකම් රොෂාන් ගමගේ, විදේශ කටයුතු අමාත්‍යාංශයේ අතිරේක ලේකම් එම්.කේ. පද්මනාදන්; ශ්‍රී ලංකා තොරතුරු හා සන්නිවේදන තාක්ෂණ නියෝජිතායතනයේ (ICTA) සභාපති, අධ්‍යක්ෂ හර්ෂ පුරසිංහ සහ Lanka Pay හි ප්‍රධාන විධායක නිලධාරී චන්න ද සිල්වා. මෙම හමුවේදී අදහස් දැක්වූ නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍ය ඉංජිනේරු එරංග වීරරත්න කියා සිටියේ ජනාධිපති අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක මහතාගේ මගපෙන්වීම අනුව රට ඩිජිටල් සමාජයක් කරා ගෙන යාමේ දැක්ම සාක්ෂාත් කර ගැනීමේ රජයේ ප්‍රයත්නයේ කොටසක් ලෙස මෙම නව ඩිජිටල් ප්‍රවේශයන් හඳුන්වා දී ඇති බවයි. මුදල් මත පදනම් වූ ගෙවීම් වංචා සහ දූෂණ ගනුදෙනු ක්‍රියාවලීන්හි අකාර්යක්ෂමතාව ඉහළ යාමට හේතු වී ඇති බව නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍යවරයා පෙන්වා දුන්නේය. මෙම අභියෝගවලට මුහුණදීම සඳහා රජයේ සියලුම ගෙවීම් ඩිජිටල්කරණය කිරීමට රජය පියවර ගනිමින් සිටී. තවද, ඩිජිටල් ගෙවීම් ප්‍රවර්ධනය කිරීම තුළින් මහජනතාවට වඩාත් පහසු සහ විශ්වාසනීය සේවාවන් සැපයීමට හැකිවන බව නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍යවරයා අවධාරණය කළේය. 1978 වසරේ ආරම්භ වූ ජනාධිපති අරමුදල මීට පෙර අයදුම්පත් භාරගෙන ඇත්තේ කොළඹ ප්‍රධාන කාර්යාලයෙන් පමණි. කෙසේ වෙතත්, අද සිට දිවයින පුරා පිහිටි ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම් කාර්යාල 341කින් මෙම සේවාවන් ලබා ගත හැක. ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම්වරුන්ගේ අධීක්‍ෂණය යටතේ පුහුණු කාර්ය මණ්ඩලයක් විසින් නව තාක්‍ෂණය භාවිත කරමින් මෙම ලියාපදිංචි කිරීම් සිදුකරන බව ජනාධිපති අරමුදලේ ලේකම් සහ ජනාධිපති ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨ අතිරේක ලේකම් රොෂාන් ගමගේ මහතා ප්‍රකාශ කළේය. ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨ අතිරේක ලේකම්වරයා වැඩිදුරටත් සඳහන් කළේ, මෙම වැඩපිළිවෙළ තුළින් ජනාධිපති අරමුදලේ සේවාවන් මහජනතාව වෙත සමීප කිරීම පමණක් නොව එම සේවාවන්ට හිමිකම් ඇති අයට ඒවා නිසි පරිදි ලබාදීම සහතික කෙරෙන බවයි. විදේශගත ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන් සම්බන්ධයෙන් වත්මන් රජයේ ප්‍රතිපත්තියට රාජ්‍යතාන්ත්‍රික දූත මණ්ඩල හරහා කාර්යක්ෂම සහ පහසු සේවා සැපයීම ඇතුළත් වේ. ඊට සමගාමීව උප්පැන්න, විවාහ සහ මරණ සහතික ලබා ගැනීමේ විද්‍යුත් ක්‍රමය (EBMD) කොන්සියුලර් සේවාවන් හරහා අද දිනයේදී ජනාධිපතිතුමාගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් ආරම්භ වන බව විදේශ කටයුතු අමාත්‍යාංශයේ අතිරේක ලේකම් එම්.කේ. පද්මනාදන් ප්‍රකාශ කළේය. උප්පැන්න, විවාහ සහ මරණ සහතික ලබාගැනීමේ යල් පැන ගිය ක්‍රම වෙනුවට විද්‍යුත් තාක්‍ෂණය මගින් දැන් කොන්සියුලර් කාර්යාල රෙජිස්ට්‍රාර් ජනරාල් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ දත්ත පද්ධතියට සම්බන්ධ කරන බවත් සහතික පිටපත් කොන්සල් කාර්යාලයෙන් කෙලින්ම නිකුත් කිරීමට හැකිවන බවත් ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් ප්‍රකාශ කළේය. මෙම නව ක්‍රියාවලිය අද සිට ක්‍රියාත්මක කෙරේ. මෙම දැනුවත් කිරීම අමතමින් ශ්‍රී ලංකා තොරතුරු හා සන්නිවේදන තාක්ෂණ නියෝජිතායතනයේ (ICTA) සභාපති හර්ෂ පුරසිංහ කියා සිටියේ GovPay සේවාව ලබා දෙන රාජ්‍ය ආයතන පිළිබඳ සවිස්තර තොරතුරු අද (07) දහවල් 12 න් පසු www.GovPay.lk වෙබ් අඩවියෙන් ලබාගත හැකි බවයි. මෙම ඩිජිටල්කරණ ක්‍රියාවලිය අඛණ්ඩ ප්‍රයත්නයක් වනු ඇත, අවසාන ඉලක්කය වන්නේ සියලුම රාජ්‍ය සේවාවන් ඩිජිටල්කරණය කිරීමයි.
