One of Australia’s biggest banks, AMP, has just made history by launching the country's first-ever numberless credit and debit cards—a game-changer in the fight against scams and identity theft.
How Does It Work?
Unlike traditional cards, these new AMP digital bank cards have no printed numbers on them. Instead, all your card details are securely stored in the AMP banking app, which has been designed with extra layers of security to keep your money safe.
No 16-digit number on the card—fraudsters can’t steal your details.
Single-use digital tokens replace traditional card numbers for payments.
Selfie video identity verification adds another level of protection.
Quick balance hide/reveal feature for added privacy.
Built for Everyone—From Everyday Users to Side Hustlers
AMP Bank group executive Sean O'Malley says these new features aren’t just for big businesses—they’re designed for everyday banking customers, freelancers, side hustlers, and small business owners who want seamless, secure banking from their mobile phones.
"We’ve built this digital bank from the ground up to make banking safer and more convenient for millions of Australians," O'Malley said.
The Future of Banking?
AMP’s move comes as Mastercard plans to eliminate card numbers by 2030, replacing them with tokenisation and biometric authentication (think fingerprints and facial recognition).
While numberless cards have already taken off in Europe and the UK, this is a huge step forward for Australia—especially since we’re one of the world leaders in card fraud attempts, with over $700 million lost to scams each year.
With scams on the rise, AMP’s numberless cards might just be the future of safer banking. What do you think—would you use one?
