One of Australia’s biggest banks has stepped up to reassure customers that cash is here to stay, amid growing concerns over businesses and banks going cashless. In an email sent to customers today, Commonwealth Bank CEO Matt Comyn promised that CBA will continue to pump billions of dollars into the economy every month, ensuring people still have access to physical money. “We know that cash is critical to our customers, the community, and to CommBank – and it’s here to stay,” Comyn wrote. He confirmed the bank will keep distributing over $4 billion in cash each month  through its branch and ATM network , which is also set for a $100 million upgrade in 2025 . Backlash Over Cash Withdrawal Fee This comes after CBA faced heavy criticism for its plan to charge customers a $3 fee for withdrawing cash from tellers at bank branches . The move sparked widespread backlash, leading the bank to put the plan on hold. Meanwhile, banks across Australia have been shutting down cash access points, with 926 ATMs and 230 branches closing in the past year alone . Some banks, like Macquarie, have gone fully digital, scrapping cash transactions at branches altogether. Government Steps In With big businesses like McDonald’s, KFC, and Gloria Jeans also moving towards cash-free stores, many feared physical money could be on the way out. However, the Albanese government recently introduced a mandate to protect cash access , ensuring people can still use it. CBA has also committed to keeping regional branches open until at least 2027 , a move aimed at supporting rural communities that rely heavily on cash. Cracking Down on Scams In his email, Comyn also addressed another major issue – the rise of scams. He revealed that CBA is sending out 18,000 scam alerts every day  and has invested over $450 million  in fraud prevention in just six months. Thanks to these efforts, customer losses to scams have dropped by more than 70% over the past two years . So, while cash may be disappearing from some businesses and banks, CBA is making it clear: they’re not phasing it out anytime soon .

A Virgin Australia pilot was the first to spot three Chinese warships off Australia’s east coast last week, Airservices Australia has revealed. The Chinese fleet—made up of a frigate, a cruiser, and a replenishment ship—was sailing just 150 nautical miles off Sydney in the Tasman Sea on Friday morning. Beijing later confirmed it was carrying out live-fire drills in international waters. Rob Sharpe, chief executive of Airservices Australia, told a Senate committee that his organisation first heard about the warships from a Virgin Australia aircraft at 9:58 am. "It was, in fact, a Virgin Australia aircraft that advised one of our air traffic controllers that a foreign warship was broadcasting, that they were conducting live firing 300 nautical miles east off our coast," Sharpe said. Peter Curran, the deputy chief executive, added that the warships were using an international guard frequency—one that air traffic controllers don’t monitor, but pilots do. Within two minutes of the report, a hazard alert was issued to all flights in the area, and the Australian Defence Force was notified shortly after. "At that stage, we didn't know whether it was a potential hoax or real. We simply passed the information as per standard procedure," Curran explained. By 10:18 am, an Emirates pilot had made contact with the Chinese ships and confirmed they were conducting live-fire exercises. In response, air traffic controllers diverted 49 flights as a precaution. Curran noted that the Chinese vessels had since moved further south in the Tasman Sea and were no longer disrupting air traffic. Trump, along with figures like Elon Musk, has been undermining or taking control of major government institutions, challenging long-standing democratic norms. This revolution, as some see it, isn't just about changing policy—it’s about changing the very structure of governance. At the core of this is the question of what happens when a president’s will, supported by a large portion of the population, challenges the independent checks on power, like the judiciary and bureaucracy. Trump’s confrontations with these institutions, along with Musk’s comments about the “unelected bureaucracy” being opposed to the people’s will, signal a shift that could have lasting consequences for the US. In Australia, we have a far more robust system of checks and balances, where attempts to consolidate power by one figure or group would likely face swift opposition. If Peter Dutton or any other Australian leader tried to pull the kind of moves Trump and Musk are making, it’s safe to say they wouldn’t last long. Taking on a 40-year mortgage might sound like a tempting way to ease the burden of high monthly repayments, but experts are warning it could end up costing borrowers a fortune in the long run. New research from Finder shows that one in three Australians—around 6.2 million people—would consider stretching their home loan to 40 years just to make their repayments more manageable. While the idea of lower monthly costs might seem appealing, the extra decade on the loan could add hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest. Right now, only a handful of lenders in Australia—SCU, Teachers Mutual Bank, and UniBank—offer 40-year mortgages, and they’re strictly for first-home buyers. Graham Cooke, Finder’s head of consumer research, says while these extended loans might help people break into the housing market, they come with a major financial sting. “While 40-year loans do offer a lower-cost route to getting your first foot on the housing ladder, staying with them until the end can be very expensive,” Cooke explained. On paper, a longer loan term lowers monthly repayments. For example, stretching a $641,416 mortgage from 30 years to 40 years could save borrowers about $300 per month. But the trade-off? An extra $316,000 in interest  over the life of the loan. Cooke knows firsthand how costly these loans can be. “I naively took out a 40-year loan when purchasing my first apartment, only to quickly realise how costly it would be in the long run,” he admitted. “Fortunately, I was able to sell the apartment a few years later.” For those considering a mega mortgage, financial experts suggest looking at other options—such as making extra repayments or refinancing later—before committing to four decades of debt. After all, the dream of homeownership shouldn’t come at the cost of financial freedom.
