Monarchists are fuming over Australia’s decision to ditch King Charles’ image from the new $5 note, calling it part of the Albanese government’s supposed push for a republic. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) recently confirmed that the new note will instead feature a design based on the theme "Connection to Country,"  celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. But the Australian Monarchist League (AML) isn’t happy, insisting that as long as Australia remains a constitutional monarchy, the reigning monarch should appear on both coins and paper currency. In a fiery statement, the AML accused the government of pushing “republicanism by stealth”  and claimed that removing the King’s image was just another step toward ditching the monarchy altogether. They even linked it to the failed Voice referendum, suggesting that a push for a republic could be next—especially if the Albanese government secures a second term. The RBA, however, is sticking by its decision. “We won’t be putting a portrait on the $5 note this time. We want to try something new,”  the bank said. They explained that the theme was chosen after receiving over 2,100 public submissions and is meant to reflect what has shaped Australia as a nation. The final design hasn’t been revealed yet, but one thing’s for sure—King Charles won’t be making an appearance.

Sounds like something straight out of a disaster movie, but it’s real—South Australian beaches are dealing with a bizarre and worrying situation. Masses of yellow foam and dead sea creatures, including fish and seahorses, have washed up along Waitpinga and Parsons beaches in Victor Harbor. And if that wasn’t alarming enough, over 100 surfers and beachgoers have reported feeling sick, experiencing symptoms like sore throats, dry coughs, itchy eyes, and even blurred vision. Anthony Rowland, one of the surfers affected, shared his experience online, saying, “We all experienced a sore throat, dry cough, and irritated eyes. Some even reported blurred vision. It lasted 24 hours or so. In the following hours/days, there was visible evidence that something weird is in the water.”  He also mentioned spotting dead marine life scattered across the beach, including leafy sea dragons. With so many people and animals affected, authorities are taking this seriously. The Department for Environment and Water has shut down both beaches while multiple agencies—including the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), SA Health, and the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA)—launch an investigation. So, what’s going on? Experts believe a microalgal bloom is to blame. These blooms, triggered by changes in temperature, light, or rainfall, can be harmful and even toxic. An EPA spokesperson pointed out that South Australia is currently experiencing a marine heatwave, with ocean temperatures about 2.5 degrees warmer than usual. Combine that with little wind and small swells, and you’ve got the perfect conditions for an algal explosion. SA Health’s principal water quality adviser, David Cunliffe, explained that exposure to this algae can cause allergy-like symptoms, including respiratory issues, eye irritation, and skin rashes. Ingesting it? That can lead to flu-like symptoms and stomach problems. His advice? Stay away from discolored water and wash off with clean water if you do come into contact with it. Meanwhile, PIRSA is investigating the fish deaths to rule out infectious diseases and pollutants. A spokesperson noted that fish kill events can be caused by all sorts of things—temperature changes, water quality issues, disease, or even pollutants. For now, if you’re in the area, it’s best to steer clear of the beaches until authorities figure out exactly what’s going on.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers  has officially confirmed that the short-lived era of budget surpluses  is over, with next week’s federal budget  set to be in deficit . For months, it had been expected that Australia would return to the red, but with a weaker Australian dollar boosting mineral exports , there was some hope that Chalmers might be able to squeeze out one more surplus . Now, he’s made it clear: that’s not happening. "A defining feature of our first three budgets was responsible economic management. That will be a defining feature of the fourth as well,"  Chalmers said on Monday. He also pointed out that while this budget will be in deficit , the gap will be “much, much smaller”  than what was inherited from the previous government. Why the Surplus Disappeared Labor managed to deliver two consecutive surpluses —a first in over a decade—largely thanks to: Low unemployment , which meant more people paying income tax Higher-than-expected coal and mineral prices , bringing in extra revenue But structural budget issues remain, and the cost-of-living crisis  isn’t helping. Coalition Turns Up the Heat on Taxes The Coalition  isn’t wasting any time making this a political issue. Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor  is touring key electorates  this week, hammering home the message that Australians are paying more tax . According to the Coalition’s analysis , the average tax bill is now $3,500 higher  than in 2021-22, thanks to rising wages pushing more people into higher tax brackets . "These are the pains that Australians are feeling. We need a budget that restores Australians' standard of living,"  Taylor said. The Coalition is also promising to bring back its tax cap —a self-imposed rule that limits government tax revenue to 23.9% of GDP . Labor scrapped that cap in 2022 , calling it arbitrary , though it has still kept taxation below that level . Chalmers pointed out that the only government to exceed that ratio was John Howard’s. Where Does Australia Stand on Taxes? For all the talk about rising taxes, Australia’s tax-to-GDP ratio , including state and local taxes, is still below the OECD average . So while taxes are increasing , in a global sense, Australians still pay less  than many other countries. With the budget announcement just around the corner, expect plenty more debate about taxes, spending, and cost-of-living pressures  in the coming weeks.

For the first time in over a month, a new photo of Pope Francis  has been released, showing him in purple Lenten vestments, seated in a wheelchair  inside the hospital chapel. The Vatican says he was celebrating Mass  with other priests—his first confirmed participation in Mass since his February 14 hospitalization  for severe bronchitis, which later developed into double pneumonia . Children’s Prayers for the Pope Meanwhile, outside Rome’s Gemelli Hospital , a heartwarming scene unfolded. Dozens of children , many from war-torn countries, gathered with yellow and white balloons  (the colors of the Vatican flag) to show their love and support  for the pope. While Pope Francis did not appear at the hospital window , he made sure to acknowledge their presence in his traditional Sunday blessing : “I know that many children are praying for me; some of them came here today to Gemelli as a sign of closeness. Thank you, dearest children! The pope loves you and is always waiting to meet you.” The event was organized by Reverend Enzo Fortunato , who called the children’s presence “the most beautiful caress” —a kind of spiritual medicine for the 88-year-old pontiff . Some of the children even got to enter the hospital  to leave behind drawings, messages, and flowers  for Francis. His first three weeks in the hospital were filled with setbacks , including: Respiratory crises Mild kidney failure Severe coughing fits However, recent X-rays show his infection is clearing , and doctors are working to reduce his nighttime dependence on a non-invasive ventilation mask , which should help his lungs strengthen naturally . While his condition is stable , he still requires hospitalization  for ongoing treatment, as well as physical and respiratory therapy —which, according to the latest Vatican update, is showing gradual improvement . A new survey has found that one in five Australians —that’s about 4.1 million people —have had a parcel stolen or lost  in the past year. These “porch pirates”  (yes, that’s a real term) are brazenly snatching  packages right off people’s doorsteps, and the numbers are rising as more Aussies opt for online shopping and home deliveries. How Are These Parcels Going Missing? According to Finder’s survey of 1011 people : 7%  had a package stolen after it had already been delivered . 6%  said their parcel was sent to the wrong address . 5%  never even saw their order—it was simply lost in transit . And the cost? The average missing package is worth $145 , which adds up to a whopping $606 million in lost deliveries every year . Who’s Getting Hit the Hardest? Gen Z shoppers ( aged 13–28 ) seem to be the biggest victims  of porch piracy, with 30% reporting a stolen or lost parcel  in the last year. How to Protect Your Deliveries Finder’s Taylor Blackburn  says there are a few ways to outsmart the thieves : Install security cameras  to catch them in the act. Track your parcels  so you know exactly when they arrive. Give specific delivery instructions  (like leaving packages in a hidden spot). And if your parcel does go missing , there’s still hope! If you paid with a credit card , you might be able to get a refund  through purchase protection —which covers most retail items like clothing, jewellery, laptops, and even art . Grocery Deliveries Are Also Being Targeted It’s not just online shopping that’s under attack— food deliveries  are also being snatched from doorsteps . Just last week, an Adelaide woman  shared footage of a man taking her $170 Woolworths order  right off her porch. “I was inside the house with my baby and opened the door two minutes after he left !” she said. Police are now investigating the incident, but one thing is clear— porch pirates are getting bolder . If you’re expecting a package, keep an eye on your doorstep!

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese  will join a phone meeting with other world leaders  tomorrow night to discuss the possibility of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine  as part of the so-called "coalition of the willing." The call, organized by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer , will also include leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and New Zealand , as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy . This follows a recent gathering of world leaders in London and a subsequent meeting of defense officials in Paris  earlier this week. Over 30 countries  have been involved in talks about how to support Ukraine, with one potential option being a multi-nation peacekeeping force  if a ceasefire is reached with Russia. Sources say Albanese will take part in the call on Saturday night Australian time  and is keeping an open mind  about whether to send Australian troops  as part of a peacekeeping mission. However, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton  has made it clear that Australia shouldn’t be involved . He accused Albanese of “shooting from the hip”  on this decision. "It just doesn’t make sense. Our job is to take care of our country and make sure we’re safe in our region," Dutton said on Friday. "We’ve supported Ukraine from the beginning, but not with troops on the ground . This is just a thought bubble  from the Prime Minister." Albanese fired back, saying that Dutton no longer stands with Ukraine . "We used to have a bipartisan position , but it seems Dutton’s walked away from that," Albanese said. "That’s his decision, but we stand for Ukraine." Ceasefire Talks Continue Meanwhile, the future of ceasefire talks  remains uncertain. It’s unclear if the United States  would offer a security guarantee  to Ukraine as part of a ceasefire agreement. Russian President Vladimir Putin  has expressed some concerns over a proposed 30-day ceasefire  but hasn’t completely ruled it out. US President Donald Trump  described Putin’s response as “promising” , though he said it was still “incomplete”  and that he’s open to talking directly with Putin. On Monday, the Russian embassy in Australia  warned that joining this "coalition of the willing" would have "grave consequences" . The embassy said “Western boots on the ground”  are unacceptable for Russia, and they won’t stay passive if Australia moves forward. In response, Foreign Minister Penny Wong  said Australia would not be intimidated  by Russia's threats.
