Australia’s ruling Labor Party has just announced a new plan to help fund some of its election promises — and it’s going to hit international students in the wallet. If Labor wins re-election, the fee for a student visa will jump from $1,600 to $2,000  starting from July 1, 2025. But it’s not just Labor making moves. The Coalition has its own plan to hike visa fees too, proposing a $5,000  application charge for students heading to the elite Group of Eight universities, and $2,500  for all other international students. Both major parties are under pressure to explain how they’ll pay for their big election promises. Labor decided to go first, revealing the cost of everything they've announced since the March budget — even though the full official costings won’t be available until after the election. At a joint press conference on Monday, Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher showed they’d found another $1 billion  in savings since the pre-election economic and fiscal outlook. "We’ll finish this election campaign with the budget in a stronger position than when we started," Chalmers said. So, where is Labor finding the extra cash? One big chunk — around $760 million  — will come from the visa fee hike. Importantly, students from Pacific Island nations and Timor-Leste won’t be affected by the changes. Labor also plans to save $6.4 billion  by cutting back on things like consultants, contractors, travel, hospitality, and other non-wage expenses. Gallagher stressed that these cuts won't mean slashing public service jobs or services — unlike the Coalition’s plan, which promises a massive cut of 41,000 public sector jobs . As a result of these savings, Labor says the cumulative budget deficit will shrink slightly from $151.6 billion  to $150.5 billion . And what’s that money being spent on? It’ll help cover Labor’s big-ticket promise: a $1,000 instant tax deduction for work expenses , which is expected to cost around $2.4 billion . Gallagher also took a swipe at previous Coalition budgets, saying Labor had managed to clean up a lot of "waste and rorts" and redirect that money into more meaningful investments — like boosting Medicare, expanding housing initiatives, cutting HECS debts, and of course, rolling out those income tax cuts. “We returned that money to the budget, and it allowed us to deliver real help for Australians,” she said. More than 30,000 Aussies have had their banking details compromised and leaked online, according to a new report from Australian tech security firm, Dvuln — and it's got security experts pretty worried. The compromised data, collected over the past four years, isn’t from a major hack into banks themselves. Instead, criminals used something called "infostealer malware" to swipe the information directly from people's personal devices — like phones and laptops — without them even knowing. Dvuln’s research shows that the banking details found online are just a "fraction" of what’s likely out there. In fact, they found information from 10,000 customers of one major bank alone sitting on "infostealer logs" — shady online spaces where hackers buy, sell, and trade stolen data. Another bank had 5000 customer details exposed, and yet another had 4000. Customers from Australia's big four banks — Commonwealth Bank, NAB, ANZ, and Westpac — were all caught up in the leak. While multi-factor authentication (MFA) — that extra step when you log into your bank app — is now standard, Dvuln warns that it’s not a silver bullet. Once infostealer malware is on your device, it can harvest login credentials before you even get a chance to punch in a verification code. "The infections targeted individual user devices and harvested their credentials, rather than compromising banking infrastructure directly," the report explained. They’re now calling for a coordinated effort between banks, government, cybersecurity experts, and the public to help close the gap between device compromises and financial abuse. Dvuln also highlighted that infostealer malware is one of the "most pervasive yet underreported threats" facing Australia’s financial sector right now. The Australian Banking Association’s CEO, Anna Bligh, confirmed that this issue comes from personal devices being hacked — not from any breach inside the banks themselves. "Keeping customers secure online is the top priority for Australia’s banks," Bligh said. Banks are constantly monitoring both the open and dark web for compromised credentials, and if they find anything suspicious, they jump into action to lock down accounts and warn customers. Commonwealth Bank is also urging customers to stay vigilant: create strong, unique passwords (and change them regularly), keep anti-virus software up-to-date, monitor account activity closely, and set up transaction alerts to catch anything unusual early. Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) — part of Australia's national security network — said they’re working hard to fight off cybercriminals targeting Australians. “Cybercriminals use information-stealing malware to get their hands on valid user credentials, then sell or exploit them for money,” the ASD said. They warned that stolen credentials can be a dangerous tool for hackers to gain access to even more targets. To put the scale of the cybercrime problem into perspective, the ASD received over 87,400  cybercrime reports in 2023–24 — and identity fraud topped the list. Bottom line: Even if your bank is secure, your personal device might not be. Keeping your software updated, using strong passwords, and being suspicious of weird links and downloads are more important than ever. With just six days until the election, Albanese and Peter Dutton faced off on Final Showdown last night, clashing over everything from the cost of living and housing, to Welcome to Country ceremonies and even the price of eggs. When the dust settled, a jury of 60 undecided voters handed Albanese a commanding win : 50%  backed him, 25%  sided with Dutton, and the other 25% were still undecided . It was a big opportunity for Dutton to close the gap with Albanese ahead in the polls—but with so many Aussies already having voted early, it’s unclear how much impact it will really have. Things Got Personal Dutton came out swinging, accusing Albanese of lying and saying he should be “ashamed” of the country’s problems over the last three years.Albanese didn’t hold back either, firing back that he wouldn’t let Dutton "attack the wages of working people." When voters broke it down category by category: Albanese smashed Dutton  on cost of living  (60% to 16%) and tax  (49% to 21%). Housing  was a lot closer (35% for Albanese to 30% for Dutton). Dutton’s strongest moment? Indigenous issues , where he led 46% to 27%. Opening Shots Dutton used his opening statement to hammer Labor on the economy, saying Australians are "doing it tough" thanks to the cost-of-living crisis created by the government.Albanese painted the election as a choice between building Australia's future—or "going back to the past," and made a big point about Labor having “clear, decisive policies” while accusing Dutton of flip-flopping. Cost of Living Albanese pushed Labor’s record hard, pointing to a drop in inflation and cheaper childcare and medicines.Dutton leaned on his promise to slash the fuel excise, saying it would offer quick relief—kind of like the COVID-era support.There was a funny moment too: when asked about the price of eggs, Dutton lowballed it massively at $4.20 for half a dozen (they’re really over $8). Albanese was closer with $7 — "if you can find them," he joked. Housing Crisis Both leaders agreed housing is a massive issue but had different takes: Dutton blamed surging house prices on migration, accusing Labor of “mismanaging” everything. Foreign Policy There was an odd moment when Albanese said he wasn’t sure if Joe Biden even had a mobile phone , when asked about international texting habits.When it came to real issues, Dutton named China’s Communist Party  as the biggest threat to Australia.Albanese was more careful, saying the relationship with China was “complex” and stressing the importance of diplomacy.Also, when asked to describe Elon Musk , Dutton called him an "evil genius,"  while Albanese just said, "Tesla, and a very rich man." Energy Energy policy showed a stark difference: Labor  is all in on renewables backed by gas and batteries. The Coalition  wants to go nuclear. Dutton accused Labor of "wrecking the economy" and blamed them for 30,000 small business closures (which Albanese flat-out rejected, saying more small businesses are operating now than ever before).Albanese pointed out that renewable projects already approved would power 10 million homes. The low pressure system responsible for all that weekend rain has now moved offshore, which means things should start easing up through Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning. But don't get too comfortable — another rain-making system is expected to form near the coast by midweek. We’ll see showers and patches of rain on Tuesday across parts of eastern and southern NSW, but the real action ramps up from Wednesday. A deepening coastal trough will bring heavier rain that’s expected to hang around into the weekend, gradually spreading further up the NSW coast and even reaching southeast Queensland. Forecasts show that some areas along the coast could cop more than 100mm of rain in just a couple of days. The good news? This week’s rain probably won’t trigger widespread flooding. The not-so-good news? Localised flash flooding is definitely possible, especially in those low-lying coastal spots. On top of the rain, brace yourself for some wild weather midweek. Blustery southerly winds and big surf are set to move up the NSW coast on Wednesday and Thursday before pushing into southeast Queensland on Friday. It’s all tied to the surge in Australians visiting Japan — nearly one million Australians went to Japan last year, a huge jump from 613,062 in 2023 — and many are returning with a new love for sake. Yoshi Honda, a Sydney-based sake importer, has seen firsthand how much the market has grown. He started importing sake more than a decade ago, and says his customer base has expanded three to five times since then. What started with just two Japanese sake brewers has now blossomed into a network of about 16, offering a variety of sake to the local market. Kenji Iwa, a sake brewer in Japan, has also noticed Australia’s increasing thirst for sake. While China and the U.S. are still the top markets for Japanese sake, Australia has quickly jumped to the eighth spot for imports — and Iwa predicts that could easily rise to the top five in the near future. In 2024, Australia imported nearly 678,000 litres of sake, which is almost three times the amount it brought in back in 2011. Ironically, while sake is booming in Australia and other Western markets, it’s struggling in Japan. Younger Japanese drinkers are moving away from sake, preferring beer, wine, and whiskey instead. "Young people don’t really drink sake anymore," Iwa said. "They think it's something their parents drank." That shift in Japan, however, has helped fuel global demand, keeping the sake industry alive. For some Japanese brewers, international markets like Australia are becoming the primary focus. Sake’s growing popularity in Australia is also due to an increase in cultural festivals and events. Major sake festivals have been held in Melbourne and Sydney, drawing thousands of attendees and dozens of Japanese breweries. Brisbane even joined the party this year with its own sake festival. And it’s not just about imports — local craft sake brewers are jumping in, too. Quentin Hanley, the owner of Melbourne Sake (Australia’s first craft sake brewery), is using local New South Wales rice and traditional Japanese methods to brew sake. While he isn’t trying to compete with Japan’s sake, he’s working to elevate the whole industry. "We started home brewing, and it just kind of snowballed from there," Hanley said. "We’re not trying to compete with Japanese sake — we just want to raise the profile of sake in Australia, and it’s working." He’s seen more high-end restaurants doing sake and wine pairings, which he says shows there’s a real demand. With Aussie food culture, particularly in Melbourne and Sydney, driving interest, sake is slowly becoming a staple at many gatherings. "Every time I mention sake, people are like, ‘Oh, I love that stuff!’ Even people you wouldn’t expect," Hanley said. "Everyone seems to be interested."
