Chris LaCivita, who helped lead Trump’s successful 2024 presidential campaign, claimed in undercover footage that he was in Australia a couple of weeks ago helping the Liberals with “structural issues” around Peter Dutton’s leadership ahead of the federal election. “I was in Australia two weeks ago helping the Liberal party,” LaCivita said during a call with undercover reporters posing as political clients. “Things seem to be moving in the right direction there.” He was quick to clarify that his work was purely political — and not connected in any way to the U.S. government. The 33-year-old, who’s from Perth, had apparently been hanging around in the bushland near the airport before somehow making his way onto the airfield itself on Tuesday night. Airline staff spotted him and quickly stepped in. He was arrested by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and later pleaded guilty in court to trespassing on Commonwealth land. If convicted, he could be fined up to $3130. He’s due back in court for sentencing on May 25 . Detective Acting Inspector Aden Jama from the AFP warned that being on the tarmac without permission isn’t just illegal — it’s also seriously dangerous. “Anyone who trespasses on Commonwealth land or enters a secure area without authorisation can expect to be prosecuted,” he said. Previously, many overseas drivers were allowed to drive in Australia under what's called the "Experienced Driver Recognition" status. But that scheme officially ended today across all states and territories — except for Western Australia and Queensland. So if you're in those two places, nothing changes just yet. For everyone else, the new rules mean that whether or not you need to take extra driving tests now depends on where your licence was issued. If you're from one of these countries — Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Hong Kong, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Cyprus, South Korea, Serbia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, or Taiwan  — you'll now need to do some additional testing before you can get your Australian licence. On the flip side, if your licence is from one of these countries — Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Ireland, Isle of Man (from 1 April 1991), Italy, Japan, Jersey, Luxembourg, Malta (from 2 January 2004), Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, or the USA  — you’re in luck. You won’t  need to take any extra tests to switch over to an Australian licence. These countries have what's called federal Recognition Status. Also worth noting: if you’re just visiting and planning to stay less than six months, you can usually drive using your existing international licence — no need to convert it in most states. And there's one more change — applying for a motorcycle licence is now a separate process from applying for a car licence. Finally, even if you have Recognition Status, you'll now be reassessed every five years to make sure you're still meeting Australia’s road safety standards. Instead, they’ll inherit a global landscape that’s more unpredictable, more dangerous, and more fragile than we’ve seen in decades. From growing tensions with China to a volatile global economy and deep uncertainty over the U.S. alliance under Donald Trump, experts say Australia can’t afford to waste any more time . Here’s a breakdown of what key figures believe the next PM must do — fast. Wake up to a “very difficult situation” Peter Jennings, a former senior Defence official and now head of Strategic Analysis Australia, put it bluntly: “We’re in a very difficult situation.” Australia’s defence force, he says, has suffered from decades of under-investment , and while China ramps up its military and geopolitical influence in the Indo-Pacific, Australia is still playing catch-up. “We’re losing capabilities quickly,” he warned. And the major investments we are  making? They won’t deliver real firepower for 10 to 15 years . AUKUS is in “crisis” Jennings didn't sugarcoat it — he thinks the landmark AUKUS security pact (with the U.S. and UK) is in danger of sinking into the quicksand . While long-term plans are in place, he believes more short-term, homegrown solutions  are critical — particularly ones driven by Australia’s private sector. Figure out how to deal with Trump Like it or not, Donald Trump is back in power, and that presents major headaches for Australia’s foreign policy. Albanese’s current strategy of keeping an “arms-length” approach has worked so far, Jennings said — but it’s not going to cut it anymore . The U.S. remains our most important strategic and economic partner, but with Trump pushing unpredictable policies, Australia has to find a way to stay in the room without losing its footing . Brace for global economic shocks Sean Turnell — an economist and advisor who spent nearly two years imprisoned in Myanmar — says the next PM must stop assuming the economy will run on autopilot . “There’s a sense of ‘situation normal’ when it’s anything but,” he warned. Trade tensions, political unpredictability, and arbitrary decisions from big powers like the U.S. could shake Australia’s economy hard . He says it’s time for a “fortress balance sheet”  — a budget that’s built to survive global shocks. Right now, neither party is truly addressing that risk , he said. The defence budget needs real backing If Australia wants a secure future, Turnell argues, the economy and national security must work hand in hand . A stronger budget = more room for defence spending. Without that, even the best-laid military strategies will fall short. The Coalition has committed to boosting defence spending by $21 billion by 2030 . Labor, so far, hasn’t made any big defence announcements in this campaign. First visits matter The first place a new prime minister visits after an election sends a big message  about Australia’s priorities. Security and defence experts say the next PM should call Trump immediately  and plan a visit to Indonesia or another Indo-Pacific partner  soon after. Since Paul Keating in the 1990s, that’s been the tradition — and for good reason. Jennifer Parker, a former naval officer and now a security expert at ANU, said it best: “There’s something significant in an Australian prime minister visiting Indonesia very quickly following an election… but a direct call to the U.S. president is just as critical.” In short, the next government won’t have the luxury of easing into power. It’s going to be a fast, complex, and critical few years ahead — and experts say Australia can’t afford to get it wrong . The statement comes just weeks after Trump slapped 10% tariffs on hundreds of countries and territories , including Australia, on what he dubbed “ Liberation Day ” for the American people. Unsurprisingly, the move didn’t sit well with the Aussie PM. Albanese labelled the tariffs as something that “is not the act of a friend or ally” , and said Australia had tried reaching out but hadn’t heard back  from the U.S. side — until now. Trump didn’t give any timeline on when  a chat might happen, or whether it would come before or after Australia’s federal election this Saturday . But according to White House officials , the election isn’t a deal-breaker in terms of opening talks. Still, the silence until now has raised eyebrows, especially since Australia and the U.S. have long-standing ties  — and slapping tariffs on your allies isn’t exactly a warm diplomatic move. This brief comment from Trump came as he marked the first 100 days of his second term , though he’s not exactly basking in public approval. Only about 4 in 10 Americans approve of his performance , and his numbers on handling the economy and trade are even lower . So while a conversation might finally be on the horizon, it’s clear there’s a bit of mending to do between Washington and Canberra. For the first time in more than three years, core inflation in Australia has finally slipped back into the Reserve Bank's target range  — and that’s big news for your wallet. The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that while headline inflation stayed steady at 2.4%  in the March quarter, the trimmed mean  — which is the RBA’s go-to measure of core inflation — dropped to 2.9% . That puts it back inside the central bank’s 2–3% target band , and it's the lowest it’s been since December 2021 . So, what does this actually mean for you? Well, it likely paves the way for interest rate cuts , with experts saying we could be on track for several before the end of the year. “That really does mean that the stage is now set for interest rate cuts, probably more than one,” said finance editor Chris Kohler . “The market is fully expecting a cut when the RBA meets on May 20.” Even before this morning’s inflation report, the market had priced in up to four rate cuts  this year — and nothing in today’s data seems to challenge that. eToro market analyst Josh Gilbert  agrees the inflation figures, while slightly hotter than expected, won’t stop the RBA from making its move. “Trimmed CPI year-over-year rose 2.9 per cent — that’s inside the RBA’s target for the first time in three years. It's good news. But don’t expect RBA Governor Michele Bullock to come out and say the job is done,” he said. He added that despite global uncertainties and softening growth outlooks, things are heading in the right direction for rate relief. Still, it’s not all smooth sailing just yet. There’s retail sales data due Friday , and a federal election this weekend , both of which could shift the outlook slightly — or at least give the RBA more to think about. And as the election campaign heats up, expect to hear a lot more about these inflation numbers. “It’s a fair chance that the government is going to be using these figures to say the war on inflation is being won — and that rate cuts are coming,” said Kohler. Treasurer Jim Chalmers  wasted no time in jumping on the news, calling the drop in core inflation a “powerful demonstration” of the government’s economic management. “Underlying inflation is now at its lowest level in three years. This is proof of the responsible economic management that’s been a defining feature of this Albanese Labor government,” Chalmers said. All eyes now turn to May 20 , when the Reserve Bank will decide whether to pull the trigger on the first rate cut of the year.
