  • International Flights Thrown into Chaos by Israel-Iran War

At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Global community informed with timely updates. Things got tense in the Middle East on Monday as several countries temporarily closed their airspace following missile attacks by Iran. Explosions were heard over Doha after Iran warned it would launch missile strikes targeting US military bases in Qatar and Iraq — including the Al Udeid base near Doha. This serious escalation came just two days after the US hit three Iranian nuclear sites. Meanwhile, Iran and Israel have been exchanging missile attacks on the same day, keeping the region on edge. Earlier Monday, former US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire — expected to start in about six hours. Whether that holds remains to be seen. The tension isn’t just a regional issue anymore. Airlines worldwide are already feeling the impact, with major flight routes being cut since Israel began strikes on Iran on June 13. Air routes to key Middle Eastern hubs — like Qatar’s capital Doha and Dubai, home to the world’s busiest international airport — have been temporarily suspended. Dubai Airports announced operations had resumed after a short pause but warned travelers to expect delays and possible cancellations. Qatar also reopened its skies after briefly shutting them down, according to its civil aviation authority early Tuesday. Experts say many airlines are steering clear of airports like Doha and Dubai due to safety concerns. With Iran or its allies possibly targeting US military bases in the area using drones or missiles, airlines are playing it safe. So, if you’re planning to fly through the Middle East, it’s a good idea to check with your airline for the latest updates. Visit the Aus News Lanka homepage   for more updates.

  • Trump's ceasefire status is unclear. Iran sets conditions.

This is a developing story brought to you by Aus News Lanka , your trusted source for global news for Sri Lankans in Australia and beyond. Tensions in the Middle East may be easing, following contrasting but potentially converging statements from both Iran and U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a possible ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Speaking at a campaign rally, Trump claimed, “Iran and Israel have agreed on a ceasefire,” suggesting behind-the-scenes negotiations may have led to a breakthrough. However, Iranian officials have offered a more cautious stance. A spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry stated, “We will halt operations only if Israel ends its illegal aggression.” The differing narratives highlight the fragility of the situation. While Trump’s assertion points to a diplomatic breakthrough, Iran’s statement underlines that any de-escalation is strictly conditional. International observers remain wary but hopeful. The global community continues to urge restraint, emphasizing that any ceasefire must be grounded in mutual commitment to peace and international law. As of now, no official ceasefire agreement has been confirmed by Israeli authorities. More updates to come on AusNewsLanka .

  • Australia Post Stamp Hike Approved for Next Month

At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. If you’re still sending letters the old-fashioned way, get ready to pay more for stamps from next month. Australia Post is hiking up the price of stamps by as much as 60 cents per letter, and the national consumer watchdog says it won’t stand in the way of the change. From July 17, here’s how prices will look: A small letter will cost $1.70, up from $1.50 A regular large letter (up to 125g) goes from $3 to $3.40 The largest letters (up to 250g) jump from $4.50 to $5.10 The good news? Prices for concession stamps and seasonal greeting cards will stay the same. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said today it won’t object to the 13.3% increase because Australia Post is actually losing money on its letter services. “We understand that these price increases will mean extra costs for consumers,” ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said. “But the evidence shows that the costs of delivering letters are now higher than the revenue they bring in.” In fact, Australia Post is currently delivering only about two letters per household per week, and that number is expected to fall even further—by over 10% in the next few years. Even with the price hike, the ACCC doesn’t think Australia Post will be able to break even on its letter service. Brakey said they’ve recommended Australia Post find ways to ease the cost burden on businesses and others who still rely on physical mail. They also suggested helping vulnerable Australians by possibly raising the limit on concession stamps, which is currently capped at 50 per customer per year. Still, even after the increase, Australia’s basic stamp price of $1.70 is below the global median of $1.93 among private postal providers. Australia Post first flagged this price hike back in November, and while the ACCC can’t approve the change, it has the power to object. Now that it hasn’t, the final stamp of approval lies with the federal communications minister—unless they step in, the new prices will kick in from July 17. • Albanese Announces Australia’s Support for US Strike on Iran

At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia supports the recent US military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, but he’s urging caution to avoid further conflict. Speaking to the media, Albanese made it clear that the government stands by the broader international goal: preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. “The world has long agreed that Iran cannot be allowed to get a nuclear weapon,” he said. “We support action to prevent that – and that’s what this is.” The US had struck three nuclear sites in Iran, which President Donald Trump claimed had been "completely and totally obliterated." But despite supporting the intent behind the strikes, Albanese emphasized that Australia does not want to see the situation spiral into a full-blown war. “We don’t want escalation,” he said, adding that Iran needs to return to negotiations and stick to its international obligations. “Iran didn’t come to the table—just as it has repeatedly failed to comply with its obligations,” he added. “We urge Iran not to take any further action that could destabilise the region.” When asked whether he had spoken to President Trump since the strikes, Albanese simply said, “No.” Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Penny Wong also threw her support behind the US strikes but stressed that de-escalation and diplomacy are still key. Speaking on the Today show, Wong explained that the US targeted specific nuclear sites, which were known to be enriching uranium close to military-grade levels. “We support action to prevent Iran getting a nuclear weapon,” she said. “We know what the UN nuclear watchdog has said – Iran is enriching to almost military levels, enough for multiple nuclear weapons.” Still, Wong made it clear: Australia doesn’t want to see the conflict escalate into a broader war. And no, the US hasn’t asked Australia to get involved. “No such request has been made and I wouldn’t speculate,” she said. “We are concerned, like many others around the world, about continued escalation. No one wants to see full-scale war in the Middle East.” Wong also addressed the growing concern for Australians still stuck in the region. She said the government is actively working to help Australians stranded in both Iran and Israel. For those trying to leave Iran, Australia has deployed support near the Azerbaijani border to assist people who can reach it. As for Israel, the situation remains extremely tense. Land crossings are off the table due to security risks, but Wong said the government is working on contingency flight plans. There’s hope, with reports of airspace opening temporarily, that some evacuation flights can go ahead. “My heart goes out to Australians in Iran and in Israel, and to their loved ones back home who are so worried about them,” Wong said. She also confirmed that the Australian Embassy in Iran has been closed due to the worsening situation there. Stay tuned with Aus News Lanka  – the leading platform for news for Australians .

  • Global Cybersecurity Threat as 16 Billion Logins Leaked

At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Global community informed with timely updates. In what's being called the largest leak of stolen data ever discovered, a jaw-dropping 16 billion login credentials have been uncovered—raising serious red flags for online safety, especially here in Australia. The massive trove, first reported by CyberNews, isn’t from one big hack like Apple, Google, or Meta getting hit. Instead, it's the result of years of cybercrime—everything from malware infections to smaller data breaches—bundled into one enormous and dangerous database. And security experts are sounding the alarm. “This isn’t just a leak—it’s basically a playbook for hackers,” researchers said.“With 16 billion records out there, criminals now have unprecedented access to login info they can use for identity theft, phishing scams, and full-on account takeovers.” Worse still? A lot of this data is fresh, not just old info being recirculated. That means it’s more likely to work—and fast. Why This Matters to You Even though the database was quickly taken offline, it only takes minutes for stolen credentials to spread on the dark web. Once they’re out, they’re out. One major issue is credential stuffing. That’s when hackers take a known email and password combo and try it across multiple websites—like banking apps, streaming platforms, and online stores—hoping people reused the same login details (which, let’s face it, many do). Here’s an example:If your exposed email is myrealname@myinternet.com  and your password is You'llNeverGuessIn2025, criminals will try that same combo across hundreds of websites to see what they can access. And if you've reused it? You're in trouble. So What Can You Do? Change your passwords—especially if you’ve used the same one across different accounts. Use a password manager to create and store strong, unique passwords. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible—it’s an extra layer of protection. Be on the lookout for phishing emails, scam calls, or suspicious activity tied to your accounts. You can also check if your credentials have been exposed using trusted tools like Have I Been Pwned . This leak is a wake-up call—online security isn’t optional anymore. With billions of records out there, a strong, unique password might be the only thing standing between you and a major security headache. • Wintry Blast Set to Sweep Southern Australia Today

At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Get ready to rug up—a wintry blast is on its way, and it’s about to hit much of southern and western Australia over the next several days. A complex low-pressure system is sweeping across the country starting today and is expected to stick around until mid-next week, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and even snow in some areas. Western Australia is first in the firing line. Today and tomorrow, the state will be hit with rain and thunderstorms, with 20mm to 50mm of rainfall expected in Perth and surrounding areas. Further inland, lighter rain will push into the Gascoyne and Pilbara districts. By Sunday through Wednesday, the system shifts eastward, heading towards Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria, bringing similar wet and windy conditions. In Adelaide, expect a bit of a rollercoaster: a high of 22°C on Sunday, but cooling down to just 15°C by Tuesday. Sydney will feel the chill too—starting in the low to mid-20s on Tuesday, then dipping to 18°C by Wednesday. One of the biggest impacts will be in the Murray-Darling Basin on Tuesday, where widespread rain is expected thanks to a burst of pre-frontal moisture. And yes, some of that will fall as snow and hail over southern parts of the region. The good news? The wintry blast won’t last too long. Warmer weather is expected to bounce back once the system passes later next week. Authorities are likely to issue severe weather warnings ahead of the front, so keep an eye on local alerts—and maybe keep that umbrella and jacket close by.
