- Twin Weather Systems Deliver Powerful Winds Across WA
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Western Australia’s far south-west has just copped the first hit in a “powerful one-two punch” of cold fronts — and there’s more wild weather on the way. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the first front swept through the region on Sunday afternoon, bringing strong winds and scattered rain. While Perth got off relatively lightly with winds around 50 km/h, other areas were hit much harder — gusts reached up to 119 km/h in some parts. Rainfall totals were pretty varied too. Most areas from Geraldton to Esperance saw around 10–25mm, but the Eastern Hills south of Perth got a heavier soak, with some spots recording up to 40mm. Now for the second punch: Another cold front rolled in early this morning. As of 5am (WA time), it was just off the coast and set to bring winds of 90 to 100 km/h to the south-west — though thankfully, it’s expected to ease overnight. You can also expect another short burst of rain, but the good news is that no major weather warnings are in place for this one — at least for now. BOM meteorologist Angus Hines said forecasters are keeping a close eye on the massive swells that might develop from the strong winds. But this system isn’t staying in WA. By tomorrow, it’s forecast to push across the country, bringing gusty winds and showers to parts of South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. So if you're in the south-east, don’t pack away that umbrella just yet — your turn is coming soon. Stay tuned with Aus News Lanka – the leading platform for news for Australians .

- Expert Slams Australia’s Health Star Rating as Misleading
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Australia’s Health Star Rating system is meant to help you make quick, healthy choices at the supermarket — but according to paediatric nutritionist Mandy Sacher, it’s completely broken. “We’re eating processed ingredients disguised as healthy snacks. We need an overhaul,” Sacher said. Sacher was so frustrated with the current system, she created her own: the Real Food Rating. And when she compared it to the government’s star system? The results were wildly different. Take muesli bars for example. “In my system, they get one-and-a-half to two stars,” she explained.“But the Health Star Rating gives them four or even four-and-a-half stars.” So what’s going wrong? While the Health Star Rating has been around for more than a decade, it’s not mandatory and relies on food manufacturers to apply it correctly — which, as you might guess, isn’t always the case. The rating system rewards ingredients like protein, fruits, vegetables and nuts, and penalizes sugar, saturated fats and high calorie content. But here’s the catch: it doesn’t account for highly processed additives — so companies can manipulate the numbers by adding things like extra fibre or protein, even if the product is packed with sugar or salt. “Companies can essentially game the system,” said Philip Baker , a senior research fellow at the University of Sydney.“They can make unhealthy products look good.” Baker says it’s time to ditch the system entirely and start fresh, pointing to front-of-package warning labels used successfully in other countries as a better option. Meanwhile, Sacher has gone ahead and rated all the muesli bars on the market using her Real Food Rating, and she’s noticed another issue — many brands leave the Health Star Rating off the packaging entirely if it’s low. “We need a system that’s compliant and gives parents a real guide,” she said.“If a product scores poorly, it shouldn’t just be hidden.” Ironically, some of the healthiest choices don’t have any stars either — so consumers are left guessing. Change is on the way — the government plans to tighten the rules and increase scrutiny on the Health Star Rating next year, with discussions about making it mandatory. But until then, Sacher warns, shoppers need to stay sharp. Stay tuned with Aus News Lanka – the leading platform for news for Australians .

- Qantas Customers Informed of Stolen Data in Cyberattack
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Qantas has confirmed that data from over six million customers was compromised in a cyberattack earlier this week — and affected passengers can expect to find out exactly what information was accessed by next week. The breach happened on Monday, when a cybercriminal targeted a customer call centre and got into a third-party customer servicing platform used by the airline. Right now, no one has come forward claiming responsibility or threatening to release the data, and Qantas says it's working closely with authorities and cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident. The airline has promised to contact impacted customers next week with specific details about what data may have been accessed, and says the information will vary from person to person. There’s a silver lining:Qantas has reassured customers that no credit card details, passport numbers, or frequent flyer information were exposed in the breach. “We know that data breaches can feel deeply personal and understand the genuine concern this creates for our customers,” said Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson .“Right now, we’re focused on providing the answers and transparency they deserve.” Hudson said the airline's cybersecurity teams are working with external specialists, and additional security measures have already been rolled out to protect the compromised system. “I want to apologise again for the uncertainty this has caused. We’re committed to keeping our affected customers informed with regular updates as our investigation progresses,” she said. So, if you’re a Qantas customer, keep an eye on your inbox next week — the airline will be sharing tailored information about what, if anything, in your personal data may have been compromised. In the meantime, no action is needed, but as always with situations like this, it’s a good idea to stay alert to any suspicious emails or account activity — just to be safe. - Millions of Small Business Owners Face Retirement Crisis
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Australia could be heading toward a retirement crisis — and it's hiding in plain sight, especially among the country’s smallest business owners. New research from AMP Bank has found that nearly half of small business operators aren't regularly contributing to their own superannuation. The survey, which focused on businesses with four or fewer employees, showed that only 55% are putting money into their super on a regular basis. That’s a stark contrast to the rest of the workforce, where about 90% receive guaranteed super — now bumped up to 12% of their income. Why the gap?For sole traders and self-employed Australians (who make up the bulk of small business owners), super contributions aren’t compulsory. Many say they’re focused on reinvesting in their business or juggling tight cash flow, especially in the early years. “It’s understandable that many small business owners prioritise their business — it often comes at the cost of super,” said John Arnott , AMP Bank’s GO Director.“Paying yourself a wage can be hard enough, let alone setting aside extra for super.” But neglecting super now could mean big trouble later.AMP’s modelling found that just $100 a week into super from age 30, assuming a 6% annual return, could grow to over $500,000 by the time you hit 65. That’s the magic of compound interest — small amounts can snowball over time. Arnott’s advice? Try to strike a balance between your short-term business goals and your long-term financial future. And take advantage of the tools already at your fingertips. “Resources like the ATO website or your banking app can help automate contributions and give you clearer insights into your cash flow,” he said.“Even small, regular super payments can make a huge difference over time — plus, the system offers real tax advantages for long-term investing.” So if you’re a sole trader or running a micro-business, it might be time to give your future self a bit more attention. Because when it comes to retirement, a little now can go a long way later. Stay tuned with Aus News Lanka – the leading platform for news for Australians .

- Weather Forces Flight Cancellations Between Brisbane and Sydney
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Strong winds and wild weather have thrown travel plans into chaos today, with nine domestic flights between Brisbane and Sydney cancelled — and dozens more grounded across the country. The main culprit? A massive “bomb cyclone” off the coast of NSW that’s been causing havoc across the region. The Bureau of Meteorology clocked wind gusts up to 81 km/h at Brisbane Airport — the strongest July gust recorded there in 26 years! This storm system is no ordinary cold front. It’s a rapidly intensifying coastal low-pressure system, often referred to as a bomb cyclone, packing wind gusts up to 125 km/h, heavy rain, flood risks, and coastal erosion from dangerous surf conditions. So far, it’s led to: 55+ flights grounded across Australia Train suspensions in storm-hit areas Power outages impacting tens of thousands of homes and businesses And widespread travel delays, especially around NSW airports. If you’re flying today or tomorrow, especially in or out of Sydney, it’s best to check directly with your airline. Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and others are already rebooking passengers affected by the weather. What’s ahead? Winds in southeast Queensland are expected to start easing later Thursday, dropping to around 50–60 km/h. The weekend looks calmer, with milder temps around 23°C and a few showers. NSW, however, will continue to feel the brunt of the storm a bit longer, with flood and wind warnings in place until the system moves further into the Tasman Sea. If you’re near the coast in NSW, stay alert to weather warnings, and if you’re travelling — especially by air — expect delays and disruptions, and stay in touch with your airline. - Trump Officials Regretted Postponed PM Meeting
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. The Trump administration has said it regrets postponing a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese — but still hasn’t locked in a new date, leaving things a little up in the air. The much-anticipated face-to-face between Albanese and President Donald Trump was supposed to happen on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada in mid-June. But that fell through when Trump left early to oversee U.S. strikes on Iran. Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong, who’s currently in Washington for Quad talks with the U.S., Japan, and India, privately discussed the missed meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. According to Wong, Rubio expressed regret about the cancellation. “He expressed his regret for the fact that the meeting had to be rescheduled and I obviously said we completely understood,” Wong told. “I think the world understood the president had a fair bit to do ahead of what was occurring in the Middle East.” Since the G7, Albanese skipped the NATO Summit in The Hague, where Trump was actually present — so the two still haven’t had the chance to connect. And as of now, there’s still no confirmed date for when that meeting might happen. Wong didn’t give anything away when asked if a new meeting was locked in: “We are working together on rescheduling the meeting. We’re both looking forward to the president and the prime minister meeting.” Meanwhile, top Australian ministers — including Wong, Deputy PM and Defence Minister Richard Marles, and Treasurer Jim Chalmers — have all made trips to the U.S. recently, reinforcing Australia’s continued engagement with Washington despite the delay. But the lack of a confirmed meeting has started to raise concerns, especially with a few big issues straining the relationship: The U.S. is pressuring Australia to raise its defence spending to 3.5% of GDP. Trump has ordered a review of AUKUS — the trilateral security pact between the U.S., U.K., and Australia — a deal Albanese continues to defend. And then there’s the ongoing issue of 50% tariffs on Australian steel and aluminium, which remains a sticking point in trade talks. Wong, trying to keep things optimistic, said the review of AUKUS is “normal practice for a new administration” and downplayed concerns over the alliance. Despite the tension, she reiterated that the U.S. remains Australia’s “closest ally and principal strategic partner.” “We will continue to work together to further our important economic and security partnership and advance our mutual interests,” she said in a statement. So while the missed meeting has raised eyebrows, both sides are playing it cool — at least publicly — and say they’re working toward getting Albanese and Trump in the same room. Eventually.
