A major sinkhole has disrupted Sydney’s CBD, forcing a school closure and cutting water to nearby businesses after a burst pipe damaged a busy intersection.
The hole opened at College Street and Prince Albert Road, near St Mary’s Cathedral. Students at St Mary’s Cathedral College were sent home as a safety precaution. Sydney Water shut off water to up to 10 nearby businesses while crews worked on repairs. A delivery truck became stuck in the collapse and was later towed away.
The incident comes amid widespread severe weather across NSW. Heavy rain overnight triggered flash flooding in parts of Sydney, including Fairfield East, prompting evacuations and more than 490 calls to the NSW State Emergency Service, with dozens of swiftwater rescues.
Authorities have also issued a shark warning for NSW beaches. NSW SharkSmart says heavy rain can reduce water visibility and increase shark activity. Swimmers are advised to avoid murky water, river mouths and areas with baitfish.
While rain has eased in Sydney and severe warnings have been lifted by the Bureau of Meteorology, flood warnings remain for large parts of outback NSW, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
A slow-moving tropical system over central Australia continues to bring heavy rain south, with Adelaide forecast to receive more than 100mm in the coming hours. Events have already been cancelled, and flash flooding is expected.
In outback Queensland, rare downpours have soaked Birdsville, where nearly a year’s worth of rain fell in just one day, according to Weatherzone.
