Brace yourselves—south-eastern Australia is in for a scorching weekend, with temperatures nudging 40 degrees across multiple states. And with major sporting events lined up, the heat is going to be a big talking point.
According to Weatherzone, warm, dry north-easterly winds will start sweeping through Adelaide tomorrow, before cranking up the heat in Melbourne on Saturday and Sydney on Sunday.
Grand Prix, AFL, and NRL Feeling the Heat
If you're heading to the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, prepare for a hot track—literally. Saturday's qualifying session at 4pm will see temperatures soar to 37 degrees over the city’s street circuit, with some outer suburbs like Tullamarine reaching a blistering 39 degrees.
Thankfully, race day on Sunday will be a different story. A cooler, wetter change is expected to sweep in around 3pm, just as the main race begins.
Meanwhile, AFL fans might see the league's heat code come into play when Geelong hosts Fremantle at 1.20pm on Saturday. With temperatures expected to hit 36 degrees, officials could delay or modify the match to protect players from the extreme conditions.
Adelaide vs. St Kilda at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday should dodge the worst of the heat, with South Australia's hottest days being Friday and Saturday (peaking at 38 degrees).
In the NRL, the Wests Tigers vs. Parramatta Eels clash on Sunday is set to be a real test of endurance.
