Powerful Ocean Swells Sweep Through Australia and Pacific

If you're anywhere near the coast in southern or western Australia this week, brace yourself - some huge waves are on the way.

A series of powerful cold fronts brewing in the Southern Ocean have whipped up massive swells, and they’re now charging toward three of Australia’s coastlines, as well as parts of Indonesia and the Pacific.

Over the past few days, gale to storm-force winds have been raging south and southwest of the country. At one point on Tuesday, those winds were so widespread, they were covering an area bigger than the entire landmass of Western Australia. That’s a serious weather system.

In the heart of the storm, seas have been towering over 10 metres high, while waves over 5 metres are pushing out from the storm zone — stretching from the west and south of Tasmania almost all the way to Africa.

These swells are now spreading out, hammering the western and southern coastlines of Australia, and continuing their journey into the Indian Ocean, Tasman Sea, and further into the Pacific.

So if you're heading to the beach, expect rough conditions and steer clear of the surf unless you're an experienced pro — and even then, it’s best to take extra care.
