$3 billion Western Sydney road upgrades locked in, work starts this year
Five major road projects worth a combined $3 billion are moving ahead in Western Sydney, with construction expected to begin later this year.
The joint Australian and NSW government projects will upgrade key roads and intersections across the rapidly growing region, with the aim of improving traffic flow, safety and access.
The largest projects are the Mamre Road and Elizabeth Drive upgrades, each valued at about $1 billion.
Mamre Road will see more than 6 kilometres of single-lane road widened to two lanes, between Erskine Park Road and Kerrs Road at Kemps Creek. Several major intersections will also be upgraded.
Elizabeth Drive will be widened between Devonshire Road and Badgerys Creek Road, improving traffic capacity and access to Western Sydney International Airport.
The Garfield Road East project will expand the road to two lanes in each direction between Piccadilly Street in Riverstone and Windsor Road at Box Hill.
The Henry Lawson Drive upgrade will deliver 1.8 kilometres of dual carriageway between Auld Avenue at Milperra and the M5 Motorway.
The Horsley Drive will also be widened to two lanes in each direction between the M7 Motorway and Wallgrove Road.
Federal Transport Minister Catherine King said the projects would strengthen Western Sydney’s transport network and support the region’s continued growth.
NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said construction remains on track to start by the end of the year.
The projects are expected to improve connectivity, reduce congestion and support communities across Western Sydney as the region continues to expand.
