BASL and Law Council of Australia sign landmark MoU
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and the Law Council of Australia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation between the two countries’ legal professions.
The agreement was signed in Seoul, South Korea, on the sidelines of the 39th LAWASIA Conference.
BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Law Council of Australia President Tania Wolff signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.
Established in 1933 and based in Canberra, the Law Council of Australia is the national representative body for the Australian legal profession. It represents more than 107,000 Australian lawyers through its constituent law societies, bar associations and Law Firms Australia.
The organisation represents the Australian legal profession on national and international matters and promotes the administration of justice, access to justice and improvements to the law.
The new agreement aims to strengthen links between lawyers in Sri Lanka and Australia through professional cooperation, information sharing and the exchange of legal materials.
It is also based on a shared commitment to the rule of law and the independence of the legal profession and judiciary.
