Polar Blast Delivers Snow for Ski Season Start

Snow lovers, get ready — the 2025 ski season is kicking off with a bang just in time for the King’s Birthday long weekend!

Two chilly cold fronts are sweeping across south-eastern Australia, bringing a steady stream of snowfall to the Australian Alps over the next week. According to Weatherzone, this wintry burst is set to deliver daily snowfalls from Saturday through to at least Tuesday.

We’re already starting to feel the chill. A weaker cold front is currently moving through, sprinkling light snow across the high-altitude regions in NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a slight chance of snow on Wednesday at Victoria’s Mt Hotham and Mt Buller, where temps are expected to peak at a frosty -1°C. Over in NSW, the alpine favourites Perisher and Thredbo might also see some early flakes.

Things are set to get even colder heading into Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with minimum temps dropping to -5°C to -7°C in the Victorian and NSW Alps — perfect conditions for snowmaking and natural falls.

But the real action starts this weekend. Two stronger cold fronts will surge through the region, ramping up snow activity. Weatherzone says snow could fall every day from Saturday to Tuesday, with early models predicting a healthy 20 to 50cm of fresh snow over that four-day stretch.

And if you’re wondering why skies are starting to look particularly dramatic — that “huge field of speckled cloud” south of the cold front is the telltale sign of a large polar air mass charging up from the Southern Ocean.

While it’s still a bit early to lock in exact snowfall totals, it’s looking like a solid season opener for Australia’s ski resorts. So, if you’ve been waiting to hit the slopes, now’s the time to dust off the gear — winter is officially here!
