A recent incident in Woollahra, a suburb in Sydney’s east, has sparked widespread condemnation and raised serious concerns within the Jewish community. Multiple properties and a Toyota Corolla were vandalized with anti-Israel graffiti, and the car was set on fire.
Authorities believe the vehicle was stolen and used by the perpetrators, described as two slim individuals, aged 15 to 20, wearing dark clothing and face coverings.
NSW Premier Chris Minns labeled the attack a “hate crime,” emphasizing it was a targeted act meant to instill fear. He assured the community of a strong police response, noting the return of Operation Shelter to heightened settings. This operation, initially launched after the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, will see increased patrols and community engagement to ensure safety.
The Premier also hinted at potential legislative changes to address antisemitism. “If laws are needed to protect people and ensure safety, we will act,” he said. He stressed that conflicts from other parts of the world must not spill onto Australian streets.
Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, called the attack another attempt to terrorize the Jewish community and urged solidarity among Australians. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also condemned the act, labeling it an “outrage” and reaffirming there is no place for hatred in Australia.
The incident is particularly distressing for Holocaust survivors, many of whom have found refuge in Australia. Minns assured the Jewish community that the majority of Australians stand with them against such hateful acts.
This attack follows another antisemitic incident in Woollahra last month, where similar vandalism occurred. However, police do not believe the two events are linked. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
