Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is continuing to lash northern Australia with intense rain, triggering major flood warnings as it moves west.
The system crossed into the Northern Territory as a category 3 cyclone on Sunday, after earlier impacting Queensland. Wind gusts reached up to 185km/h before weakening into a tropical low.
Despite losing strength, the system has delivered heavy rainfall across the region. Some areas recorded up to 200mm overnight, with significant falls in Adelaide River, Central Plateau and Howley Creek.
Authorities have issued major flood warnings for several rivers, including the Adelaide, Daly, Katherine and Waterhouse. Flooding is expected to continue even after the rain eases.
The system is now tracking over the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf towards the Kimberley. Forecasters say heavy rain will continue across northern Western Australia into tomorrow.
There is also a strong chance the system could regain cyclone strength by midweek as it moves offshore. If that happens, it is expected to track west-southwest, staying mostly off the coast.
Warnings are in place for parts of the Kimberley, with risks including strong winds, rough seas and heavy showers along coastal areas.
Looking ahead, the system’s path remains uncertain. Early forecasts suggest it could move towards Western Australia’s coast next weekend, but conditions are still developing.
