BHP to Cut 300 Jobs Across Western Australia’s Pilbara Mines

Mining giant BHP has confirmed plans to cut 300 jobs across its Western Australian iron ore operations, affecting several major sites in the Pilbara region.
The company said it is still finalising the details and consulting with affected employees. The job cuts will involve its South Flank, Mining Area C, Newman and Jimblebar operations in north-western Western Australia.
BHP said workers and trade unions were first notified of the proposed changes on October 5.
The company said the changes were aimed at improving safety, efficiency and productivity while maintaining the long-term contribution of its WA iron ore business to the state’s economy.
BHP also said it would seek to redeploy affected employees into other positions within the business wherever possible.
Union representatives are seeking further details about the number of roles affected and the expected timeline for the changes.
The Western Mine Workers Alliance (WMWA), a coalition of the Australian Workers’ Union and the Mining and Energy Union, said it would meet with BHP executives to discuss the planned cuts.
The alliance said it would push for alternatives to forced redundancies and seek to reduce the impact on its members.
The proposed job losses have raised concerns about employment security across one of Western Australia’s key mining regions.
