Big news for Aussie schools—Prime Minister Anthony Albanese just announced that every public school in the country will be fully funded by the federal government. Yep, every single one.
As part of this, Queensland public schools are set to receive a massive $2.8 billion over the next decade, finally bringing the state in line with the rest of Australia when it comes to school funding. That means around 560,000 students in Queensland alone will benefit.
The timing? Well, it’s dropping just two days before the federal budget is released—talk about a power move. Albanese made the announcement in Canberra, saying, “Education opens the doors of opportunity, and today, we are widening them.”
And it’s not just Queensland—this is part of a huge $16.5 billion investment into public schools across Australia in 2025 and 2026. According to the PM, it's the biggest boost to public school funding any government has ever made. No wonder he and Queensland Premier David Crisafulli are calling it historic.
But don’t think this is just free money with no strings attached. “This isn’t a blank cheque,” Albanese said. Instead, the funding will go towards real, practical education reforms, tackling challenges specific to Queensland public schools. The goal? Better education outcomes, making sure kids—no matter where they are—don’t fall behind.
Crisafulli echoed that sentiment, saying this funding will help every student, from kids in remote areas to ones who haven’t even been born yet.
And in case you thought this presser was about something else—you're not alone. Albanese joked that some people expected him to use this moment to call the 2025 Federal Election.
Instead, he confirmed that the election will be in May… but didn’t spill any further details.
Oh, and his official X (formerly Twitter) account, @albomp, kept it simple: “NEWS: We’ll fully fund every school in Australia.”
Big day for education in Australia—what do you think?
