Ever wondered what the inside of a cyber scam operation looks like? Well, the Australian Federal Police (AFP)  is giving people a literal  look inside one, after their cybercrime experts joined forces with Philippine law enforcement  in a former scam centre—now repurposed as a training hub  to take down cyber criminals. Scams are big business  for criminals, and unfortunately, Australians are a prime target. Just this year, Scamwatch  received nearly 250,000 reports  of scams, costing people over $318 million . These offshore scam hubs—known as " boiler rooms "—are set up by organised crime syndicates , recruiting hundreds of people to trick and defraud victims worldwide . But from the outside, they look just like any regular office building . The Fight Against Scam Centres The AFP International Network  has officers stationed across Asia , including in the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar . They work closely with local authorities to track down, dismantle, and prosecute  those running these scam centres. Now, two AFP cybercrime experts  are in the Philippines, helping run an intensive five-day training program  for cybercrime units  within the country's law enforcement. This first-of-its-kind workshop was held in a former scam centre , which has now been converted into government offices . And it’s not just about law enforcement—the centre’s old kitchen  has even been transformed into a community food program , serving up to 700 meals a day  to homeless and underprivileged children. Talk about turning something bad into something good! Taking Down the Scammers Since August 2024 , AFP’s Operation Firestorm  has helped shut down three scam centres in Manila , leading to hundreds of arrests  and the seizure of thousands of electronic devices —from mobile phones and SIM cards to computers. In one case, authorities identified over 5000 Australian phone numbers  linked to scam messages found on seized devices. Working with the National Anti-Scam Centre (NASC) , the AFP sent out text and email warnings  to potential targets, alerting them to the risk of romance and cryptocurrency scams . ‘Stopping Scams at Their Roots’ AFP Cybercrime Operations Commander Graeme Marshall  put it simply: "To stop scams at their roots, we must target and disrupt scam centre boiler rooms fuelling their growth and outreach. Our priority is to protect Australians and their savings from being defrauded—no matter where these scammers are in the world." And the Philippines’ Presidential Anti-Organised Crime Commission (PAOCC)  agrees, with Undersecretary Gilberto DC Cruz  saying the AFP’s training has "empowered"  local law enforcement to fight cyber fraud more effectively . The fight against online scams isn’t slowing down, and with global cooperation , authorities are hoping to shut down more of these criminal operations  before they cause even more damage.

Queensland just can’t seem to catch a break from the rain, and it looks like there's more on the way. Flood alerts  now stretch over 3000km  of the state, and things aren’t easing up anytime soon. According to Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines , the remnants of ex-Tropical Cyclone Dianne  are set to dump another 50mm or more  of rain over the next few days. That’s bad news  for already-soaked catchments, meaning flooding will remain a major issue across central and western Queensland  for the foreseeable future. The flooding has been so widespread that it’s now spilling over  into the Northern Territory and northern New South Wales . Meanwhile, in Queensland’s east, the Mary and Noosa rivers are still flooded , though water levels are finally starting to go down. Yesterday’s rain wasn’t as intense, but some areas—like the Sunshine Coast and Noosa —still copped between 50mm and 80mm . There is a bit of good news , though. Hines says that Dianne is moving fast , expected to cross Queensland in just 24 hours  after making landfall later today. But it’s not just the rain to watch out for— damaging wind gusts  are also in the mix. And since the ground is already saturated , any extra rain will likely flow straight into the rivers , keeping Western and Central Queensland  flooded for days—if not weeks  to come. The superannuation industry  has issued a public apology for systemic failures  that added unnecessary stress to Australians already grieving the loss of a loved one. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC)  released a major report  today about how death benefit claims were handled. It investigated 10 key superannuation trustees, including big names like HESTA, Hostplus, Rest , and UniSuper , covering the period from 2022 to 2024. Together, these trustees manage around 38% of all superannuation member benefits  in Australia, which is worth $4.1 trillion . The findings? None of these trustees tracked or reported how long it took to handle death claims or how efficiently they were processing them. Even worse, 78% of the claims reviewed  were delayed because of issues the trustees could have controlled. First Nations members  experienced even greater delays . A shocking 27% of claims were met with poor customer service —including phone calls not being returned, queries being dismissed , and claimants being asked for unreasonable information. ASIC Commissioner Simone Constant  said many of the complaints were distressing, highlighting the grief, frustration, and suffering experienced by claimants. One example mentioned in the report was a woman who lost her husband and had to wait more than 500 days  for a $100,000 death benefit. She still hasn’t received it and was left struggling with financial hardship and an unhelpful claims process. In another case, a wife lost her husband after 20 years of marriage, only to receive a $600,000 death benefit  three weeks later than she should have. Her experience with customer service was equally frustrating, taking months of follow-ups  just to get a response. ASIC is now calling on the superannuation sector to immediately address  these issues by adopting 34 recommendations  to improve the process, including clearer procedures, better staff training, and removing barriers for First Nations members . ASIC chair Joe Longo  stressed that this kind of disconnect is unacceptable, especially in the superannuation sector, which affects everyone in Australia, from families to corporate boardrooms. The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA)  has welcomed the report and apologized for the mistakes. Mary Delahunty , the ASFA CEO, said, “We know we have let down some of our members and their families at a time when they needed us, and we are sorry.”  The sector is now committed to making things right.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese  has made it clear—he’d “prefer it”  if a Chinese research vessel  wasn’t hanging around in Australian waters. The ship in question, the Tan Suo Yi Hao , is currently off the South Australian coast in the Great Australian Bight . It’s a Chinese mothership  that carries smaller submarines and is reportedly used for both scientific research and intelligence collection . Albanese confirmed that the Australian Defence Force is monitoring the situation , but he wasn’t giving away too many details— “for obvious reasons” . “I would prefer that it wasn’t there,” he said while speaking in Perth  today. “But just as Australia has vessels in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait , this vessel is here. We’re keeping an eye on it.” According to Albanese, the ship came from New Zealand  and is expected to head back to China  by going the long way around. This all comes just a month after a fleet of Chinese navy ships  unexpectedly sailed around Australia. That situation got even more tense when Australia raised concerns  over a live-fire drill alert , but China dismissed the concerns as “exaggerated” . At the time, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian  pushed back, saying, “Australia’s claims are completely unfounded. China’s actions are in full compliance with international law.” Despite the rising tensions, Albanese says he has full confidence  in Australia’s armed forces and security agencies  to handle the situation. “What our task is to do, is to make sure that we represent Australia’s national interest ,” he said. “We do that each and every day.” The Department of Defence  has been contacted for further comment, but for now, Australia is keeping a close watch .

Sydney commuters, heads up! A major rail line is shutting down for two months  as work on the new Southwest Metro  continues. The T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown line  will be closed from April 27 to June 29 , but don’t worry—fare-free buses will be running in its place. According to the NSW government , the closure isn’t just for the Metro upgrade. They’re also "future-proofing" the T6 line so it can handle eight-car trains  instead of the current four-car limit. The T6 is a short shuttle line  with six stations, created when the old T3 Bankstown line  was partly shut down. It carries about 11,000 passengers a day , so this closure is going to impact quite a few people. What are your options? If you use Lidcombe, Berala, or Regents Park , you’re in luck—other train lines still run there, including T3 services . Lidcombe commuters  heading to the city or inner west  can hop on the T1 Western Line, T2 Inner West Line, or T3 Liverpool via Regents Park Line . If you use Yagoona, Birrong, or Bankstown , those stations will be completely closed  during the works. Replacement bus services The 8T6  bus will stop at all  T6 stations between Bankstown and Lidcombe . The 8AT6  bus is an express  between Bankstown and Lidcombe for a faster trip. You can also switch to a train  at Lidcombe or Regents Park . At Bankstown , you can change to the pink Southwest Link buses . Plan ahead, and hopefully, the upgrades will be worth the wait!

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake  struck near Tonga early Monday morning (late Sunday AEDT), triggering a tsunami warning for the region. According to the US Geological Survey , the quake hit about 100km north-east  of Tonga’s main island. Soon after, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre  issued an alert, warning that hazardous waves could affect coastlines within 300km of the epicenter . So far, there haven’t been any reports of damage or injuries, but authorities are keeping a close watch. Tonga, a Polynesian country made up of 171 islands , is home to just over 100,000 people , most of whom live on Tongatapu , the main island. The country sits more than 3,500km off the Queensland coast  and is no stranger to seismic activity, given its location in the Pacific’s Ring of Fire . Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and hopefully, the impact remains minimal.

Good news for Aussie businesses! They can now sell their products on Temu, the super popular Chinese-owned online retailer. Temu, which only launched in Australia last year, is giving local sellers the chance to tap into its massive platform and connect with millions of shoppers. According to a Temu spokesperson, this move is great for Aussie consumers, too. It means they’ll get a broader selection of products from local sellers and enjoy faster delivery times. "Local businesses can now use Temu as a low-cost way to reach new customers and expand their businesses," they added. Right now, Temu offers free standard shipping on most items, but it can take anywhere from 6 to 20 days. For some items, though, delivery can be as fast as one business day if they’re shipped from local warehouses. For express shipping, prices range from $19.95 to $89, as many goods are still coming from China. Temu has already launched similar partnerships in places like the US, UK, Germany, Japan, and South Korea. The company says that more than 50% of sellers on its platform make a sale within 20 days. Australian sellers can start listing their products today. Since its launch in 2023, Temu has been growing fast in Australia, with visits up by 72% year-on-year. It was even the most-downloaded iPhone app in Australia last year! The platform is known for its insanely cheap products and campaigns where users can earn credits to spend on the site, essentially getting stuff for free. According to Roy Morgan, about 3.8 million Aussies have made purchases from Temu in the last year. It looks like Temu is here to stay!
