"Young people don’t really drink sake anymore," Iwa said. "They think it's something their parents drank." That shift in Japan, however, has helped fuel global demand, keeping the sake industry alive. For some Japanese brewers, international markets like Australia are becoming the primary focus. Sake’s growing popularity in Australia is also due to an increase in cultural festivals and events. Major sake festivals have been held in Melbourne and Sydney, drawing thousands of attendees and dozens of Japanese breweries. Brisbane even joined the party this year with its own sake festival. And it’s not just about imports — local craft sake brewers are jumping in, too. He was seen being escorted away from the service. Hersant made headlines last year for being the first Victorian convicted for performing an illegal Nazi salute in public, serving a month behind bars. Victoria Police confirmed they’re investigating a 26-year-old man from Kensington over the incident, and he’s likely to be charged. Premier Jacinta Allan didn’t hold back in condemning the behaviour. “To pierce the sombre silence and solemnity of the dawn service isn’t just disrespectful — it dishonours everything those who served stood for,” she said. “For a neo-Nazi to behave that way at such a sacred moment is absolutely disgraceful.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese echoed that, calling it “abhorrent, un-Australian, and disgraceful.” He added that those responsible should face the full force of the law. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton agreed, calling the heckling a “disgrace” and saying neo-Nazis “have no place” in Australia. “They’re not part of Australian culture. Two women are in hospital this morning after being struck by lightning in separate incidents during a wild night of storms in south-east Queensland. One woman was hit at Yandina on the Sunshine Coast, and another at Burpengary, as the region was slammed with intense thunderstorms and heavy rain overnight. It was a seriously stormy night — West Woombye copped 151mm of rain in just three hours, and Nambour wasn’t far behind with 136mm. Around 3am, a driver got caught in flash flooding and had to be rescued. Thankfully, they were taken to hospital in stable condition. Although the severe thunderstorm warning has now been lifted for Brisbane, the Bureau of Meteorology says we’re not out of the woods just yet — the city could still see up to 90mm of rain today. And yes, the wet weather is likely to hang around into the long weekend, with things easing off by Sunday. And it’s not just Queensland dealing with the wild weather. Over in New South Wales, storms are expected to sweep across the southwest today and into tomorrow morning, hitting Sydney later this afternoon and evening. Weatherzone is warning of damaging winds and even hail in some western and northern parts of the state. Victoria’s also in for a soggy couple of days, with widespread rainfall of 20 to 30mm expected across central, western, and northern areas. Some spots could see as much as 40 to 50mm. Down south, both Adelaide and Hobart woke up to cloudy skies, and showers are on the cards through the weekend. Victorians struggling to keep up with rising owners corporation (OC) fees are about to get a bit of help — thanks to a new rule that makes it mandatory for fee notices to include advice on payment plans and dispute resolution options. The move comes as more and more apartment owners, especially in Melbourne’s inner suburbs and CBD, are feeling the financial pinch. Real estate agents say they’ve seen a growing number of landlords and owners being forced to sell in recent years, pushed out by the rising costs of OC fees and other property-related expenses. It’s also part of what’s been driving up rents across the city. Just two years ago, the average unit in the CBD was going for $380 a week. Now? It’s jumped to a whopping $650, according to PropTrack data. Consumer Affairs Minister Nick Staikos says the new OC fee notices are about giving people support — not just a bill. “These notices aren’t just about saying ‘pay up’ — they’re about making sure people know their options if they’re struggling,” he said. Alongside the new notices, there’s now also a dedicated owners corporation helpline, aimed at guiding people through tricky strata issues. The older version of overdue fee notices is now officially out — and operators of owners corporations will have to use the updated format moving forward. But while this is a positive step, industry voices say more needs to be done — especially as the state pushes for more high-rise developments. Real Estate Institute of Victoria boss Kelly Ryan pointed out that the issues with OCs aren’t new — and we need to be proactive, not reactive. “If people are ending up on payment plans, that means there’s been a breakdown somewhere earlier in the process,” she said. “If we’re encouraging more high-rises, now’s the time to sort this out. We can’t just be playing catch-up later.” Susan Chandler from the Strata Community Association of Victoria agrees. She welcomed the helpline as a “practical” move, especially for people who are new to apartment living. “Strata rules can be really overwhelming if you’re not familiar with them,” she said. “This gives people a clear line of support.” She also said offering payment plans would help keep buildings financially healthy, by preventing unpaid fees from stacking up. But her group is still pushing for the introduction of a Victorian Strata Commissioner to take things even further. From the real estate side, Ray White Southbank principal Andrew Salvo says OC fees have added nearly $1000 a year to the costs of a typical two-bedroom apartment. That, on top of interest rate hikes and new rental standards for landlords, has caused many investors to bow out. “As investors leave the market, rents go up — especially with increased migration and supply shortages,” he said. Salvo added that many OC fee increases are locked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), so in a high-inflation environment, it’s no surprise fees have jumped. While payment plans might ease the burden a little, he doesn’t think they’ll make a big dent, given the broader pressures landlords and owners are facing. So, while this new initiative may not fix everything, it’s at least a step in the right direction for those just trying to stay afloat in a tough market. ICT/BPM, ඉදිකිරීම්, මූල්‍ය සේවා, සහ ප්‍රවාහන සහ ප්‍රවාහන අංශයෙන් සමන්විත සේවා අපනයන අංශය, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ අපනයන කළඹ විවිධාංගීකරණය කරමින් දිවයින පුරා ඉහළ වටිනාකමක් ඇති රැකියා අවස්ථා නිර්මාණය කිරීම අඛණ්ඩව සිදු කරයි. 2024 වසරේ පළමු කාර්තුවට සාපේක්ෂව 4.61%ක සෞඛ්‍ය සම්පන්න වර්ධනයක් සනිටුහන් කරමින් 2025 ජනවාරි සිට මාර්තු දක්වා සමස්ත වෙළඳ භාණ්ඩ අපනයනය ඇමෙරිකානු ඩොලර් මිලියන 3,325.09ක් ලෙස ඇස්තමේන්තු කර ඇත. The Defence Department handed the contract to a Dutch company, Damen, last year, but it’s now been revealed that the first of the tug boats was actually built at Damen’s shipyard in Changde, China —and finished just before New Year’s Eve. That vessel’s already been delivered to Darwin, and two more are on the way. Interestingly, Damen didn’t exactly shout from the rooftops that this was happening in China.  In fact, a letter from the company to Defence last year mentioned overseas supply chains but made no mention of China specifically. The letter claimed the build would offer “value-for-money” for Australia and would tap into both local and international resources. Documents show the second tug boat should arrive by May , with a third coming before the end of 2025 . According to Damen, about 47% of the contract’s value  is expected to be spent in Australia—mostly covering the long-term maintenance of the vessels over their 25-year lifespan . But here’s where things get a little more eyebrow-raising: Defence has now confirmed  the boats are being built in China and then fitted out in Vietnam. Still, they insist these aren’t official Navy ships. Instead, they'll be operated by civilians , although Defence reserves the right  to crew them in “rare situations,” like emergencies. So why the secrecy? That’s what the Opposition wants to know. Shadow Defence Minister Andrew Hastie  says Richard Marles , the Defence Minister, needs to explain exactly what he knew—and whether he signed off on building military-support vessels in a Chinese shipyard. “Did Marles approve this himself, or was he just not paying attention?” Hastie asked. “And what steps are being taken to protect national security?” Marles hasn’t commented yet, but the issue is already drawing comparisons to 2016 , when Labor slammed the Coalition  for outsourcing the manufacturing of Australian Army uniforms to China, even though the contract was technically with a local company. It’s a bit of a twist too, because Damen was recently picked to provide the design  for a whole new Landing Craft Heavy fleet  for the ADF—eight of which will  be built in Australia by Austal in Western Australia. So, while these tugs might not technically be Navy vessels, they are supporting the Navy—and now, they’re raising some pretty big questions about transparency, local industry support, and national security.
