The NSW SES has mobilised flood rescue teams and is preparing communities for the severe weather,” he said. He also gave a blunt reminder for anyone tempted to drive through floodwaters: “If you come across a flooded road — stop, turn around, and find another way.” Rivers likely to be impacted include the Hunter, Williams, Patterson, Myall, Manning, Nambucca, Gloucester, Bellingen and Orara. As the rain and wind rolled in over the weekend, the SES already responded to 137 calls for help on Saturday night alone — mainly around Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens, but also as far south as Waverley and Woollahra in Sydney’s east. In a recent meeting in Rome, the EU’s top official, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, floated the idea of a deeper security and defence partnership with Australia to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Ever walked into one supermarket with groceries from another, only to be questioned like you’re trying to pull off a heist? That’s exactly what happened to one frustrated Aussie shopper, and it’s now sparked a bigger conversation around what stores can (and can’t ) legally demand from you. Sharing their experience on Reddit’s AusLegal forum, the shopper explained they had just picked up a trolley full of groceries from Aldi before stopping into a Coles in Victoria to grab a few more bits. “I had a trolley full of items I had bought at Aldi, and popped into Coles for a few bits,” they wrote. “The lady at the self-checkout pointed at the 30-pack of Coke cans and demanded to see a receipt to prove I didn’t steal it.” The shopper said they don’t usually keep receipts unless it’s for something expensive or refundable — and frankly, who does? But apparently, that didn’t stop the staff member from insisting they should  keep receipts from other stores just in case. Feeling a bit miffed, the shopper turned to Reddit for answers. So what does the law actually say about this kind of situation? We asked criminal defence lawyer Jahan Kalantar, author of Talk Your Way Out of Trouble , to break it down. “The law does not give private retailers like Coles and Woolworths any legal authority to compel you to produce proof of purchase for goods that you bought somewhere else,” Kalantar said. In short: you’re not legally required to show a receipt for something you didn’t buy from that store. And if a security guard or staff member tries to detain you over it? “If the Coles worker keeps you there, there’s a possibility that it might be a false imprisonment claim,” Kalantar explained. Of course, most people just show the receipt to avoid drama. But what if you didn’t  keep it — or paid with cash? Kalantar shared a story: “I had one where the guy didn’t have his receipt, but he just opened his bank account and said, ‘Here is the transaction. I couldn’t have taken it.’” Still, he says, you have a right to your privacy. “Just because you walk into a store and they have some assumption doesn’t mean anything. It’s very different if they’ve seen you on camera pocketing something, but there is no fundamental legal authority that a security guard can compel you to provide a receipt from a different store.” So next time you’re rolling your trolley from one store to another, rest easy — you’re not legally required to prove your shopping history. If you’re on the east coast of Australia, don’t put away your jackets or umbrellas just yet — the weekend’s bringing a mix of cold snaps and soggy skies. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued weather warnings along the entire east coast, with everything from rain to damaging winds expected to hit different parts of the country over the next few days. Starting with Queensland and New South Wales, rain that’s been hanging around today isn’t going anywhere just yet. In Queensland, things should start to clear from late Saturday morning, but cool south-westerly winds will move in behind the wet weather, so it’ll still feel chilly. In NSW, the real action kicks off on Sunday, with a coastal low-pressure system expected to form and deepen. That means showers, strong winds — possibly damaging — and hazardous surf are all on the way, according to BoM meteorologist Miriam Bradbury. “The location, development and movement of this system will directly influence the rainfall totals and the impact along the coast,” she said. Southern and central NSW will see the heaviest rainfall on Sunday, but by Monday and Tuesday, that wet weather will shift north to hit the Central Coast, Hunter, and Mid North Coast. Expect at least 50mm of rain daily along the coast, with some areas seeing much more. There’s also a risk of damaging winds and rough surf — which could bring down trees and make coastal conditions dangerous. Meanwhile, further south, Tasmania, Victoria, and South Australia are bracing for what’s being called the coldest weekend of the year so far. A cold front is sweeping through, bringing gusty winds, scattered showers, and even a chance of hail in Victoria and severe frost in Tasmania. “Daily temperatures will drop 2 to 5 degrees below the May average,” Bradbury said. That means daytime highs struggling to get over 16°C, and overnight lows dropping to as little as 0°C in some spots. The good news? These phishing scams are impersonating AusPost and claim your delivery failed because of an invalid postcode. Adam Cartwright, Australia Post’s Chief Information Security Officer, says the scammers are banking on how busy we are — and how eager we get waiting for packages. “Scammers prey on busy lifestyles and the excitement and urgency in waiting for a package,” he said. His advice? “ Don't click any links  or reply to suspicious messages. If you’re expecting a parcel, the safest way to track it is through the official AusPost app .” This latest scam is part of a bigger operation called “Darcula” — yes, like Dracula — a phishing service that lets scammers rent out tools to impersonate well-known brands, including Australia Post. The scary part? These tools are sophisticated enough to slip past many scam filters, making them harder to detect and block. Aussies are definitely feeling it. Around 90% have received a scam text or call, and nearly three-quarters say it involved a fake parcel delivery. So just to be clear: Australia Post will never ask for personal or financial info like passwords, credit card numbers, or bank details via call, text, or email. They also won’t ask you to make a payment over text or email. Bottom line? If something smells off, it probably is. Australia’s unemployment rate has stayed steady at 4.1%, even as nearly 90,000 people found work last month — a surprising result just days before the Reserve Bank is expected to cut interest rates. The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the new jobs data this morning, and it shows a job market that's stronger than expected. In April, 89,000 jobs were created — way above what economists had forecast. Of those, 59,500 were full-time and 29,500 were part-time. Nine’s finance editor, Chris Kohler , summed it up: “It’s a bit of a split. The unemployment rate held steady — that was expected. But the number of new jobs? That’s a real surprise. Much stronger than anyone thought.” Despite the surge in hiring, economists say it probably won’t derail an interest rate cut next Tuesday. The market still has a 96% expectation that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will lower the cash rate by 25 basis points. But this unexpected jobs boost could make the RBA more cautious about additional cuts later in the year. “If the labour market keeps showing this kind of strength, we might be looking at three cuts instead of four  for the rest of 2025,” Kohler explained. “And if the RBA does cut rates next week, expect some careful, measured words  from Governor Michelle Bullock.” There was another standout figure in the report: Women made up the bulk of new hires , accounting for 65,000 of the 89,000  jobs created. For men, it was 24,000. Also worth noting: the national participation rate ticked up by 0.3%, with strong growth in the 35–44 age group. “The participation rate for people aged 35 to 44 had the largest annual growth, up 1.9 percentage points to 88.3%,” said ABS head of labour statistics Sean Crick . So while the jobless rate hasn’t budged, the economy is clearly still generating jobs — and plenty of them. The real question now is how the Reserve Bank will read the room next week.
