- Albanese Announces Australia’s Support for US Strike on Iran
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia supports the recent US military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, but he’s urging caution to avoid further conflict. Speaking to the media, Albanese made it clear that the government stands by the broader international goal: preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. “The world has long agreed that Iran cannot be allowed to get a nuclear weapon,” he said. “We support action to prevent that – and that’s what this is.” The US had struck three nuclear sites in Iran, which President Donald Trump claimed had been "completely and totally obliterated." But despite supporting the intent behind the strikes, Albanese emphasized that Australia does not want to see the situation spiral into a full-blown war. “We don’t want escalation,” he said, adding that Iran needs to return to negotiations and stick to its international obligations. “Iran didn’t come to the table—just as it has repeatedly failed to comply with its obligations,” he added. “We urge Iran not to take any further action that could destabilise the region.” When asked whether he had spoken to President Trump since the strikes, Albanese simply said, “No.” Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Penny Wong also threw her support behind the US strikes but stressed that de-escalation and diplomacy are still key. Speaking on the Today show, Wong explained that the US targeted specific nuclear sites, which were known to be enriching uranium close to military-grade levels. “We support action to prevent Iran getting a nuclear weapon,” she said. “We know what the UN nuclear watchdog has said – Iran is enriching to almost military levels, enough for multiple nuclear weapons.” Still, Wong made it clear: Australia doesn’t want to see the conflict escalate into a broader war. And no, the US hasn’t asked Australia to get involved. “No such request has been made and I wouldn’t speculate,” she said. “We are concerned, like many others around the world, about continued escalation. No one wants to see full-scale war in the Middle East.” Wong also addressed the growing concern for Australians still stuck in the region. She said the government is actively working to help Australians stranded in both Iran and Israel. For those trying to leave Iran, Australia has deployed support near the Azerbaijani border to assist people who can reach it. As for Israel, the situation remains extremely tense. Land crossings are off the table due to security risks, but Wong said the government is working on contingency flight plans. There’s hope, with reports of airspace opening temporarily, that some evacuation flights can go ahead. “My heart goes out to Australians in Iran and in Israel, and to their loved ones back home who are so worried about them,” Wong said. She also confirmed that the Australian Embassy in Iran has been closed due to the worsening situation there. Stay tuned with Aus News Lanka – the leading platform for news for Australians .

- Global Cybersecurity Threat as 16 Billion Logins Leaked
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Global community informed with timely updates. In what's being called the largest leak of stolen data ever discovered, a jaw-dropping 16 billion login credentials have been uncovered—raising serious red flags for online safety, especially here in Australia. The massive trove, first reported by CyberNews, isn’t from one big hack like Apple, Google, or Meta getting hit. Instead, it's the result of years of cybercrime—everything from malware infections to smaller data breaches—bundled into one enormous and dangerous database. And security experts are sounding the alarm. “This isn’t just a leak—it’s basically a playbook for hackers,” researchers said.“With 16 billion records out there, criminals now have unprecedented access to login info they can use for identity theft, phishing scams, and full-on account takeovers.” Worse still? A lot of this data is fresh, not just old info being recirculated. That means it’s more likely to work—and fast. Why This Matters to You Even though the database was quickly taken offline, it only takes minutes for stolen credentials to spread on the dark web. Once they’re out, they’re out. One major issue is credential stuffing. That’s when hackers take a known email and password combo and try it across multiple websites—like banking apps, streaming platforms, and online stores—hoping people reused the same login details (which, let’s face it, many do). Here’s an example:If your exposed email is myrealname@myinternet.com and your password is You'llNeverGuessIn2025, criminals will try that same combo across hundreds of websites to see what they can access. And if you've reused it? You're in trouble. So What Can You Do? Change your passwords—especially if you’ve used the same one across different accounts. Use a password manager to create and store strong, unique passwords. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible—it’s an extra layer of protection. Be on the lookout for phishing emails, scam calls, or suspicious activity tied to your accounts. You can also check if your credentials have been exposed using trusted tools like Have I Been Pwned . This leak is a wake-up call—online security isn’t optional anymore. With billions of records out there, a strong, unique password might be the only thing standing between you and a major security headache. - Wintry Blast Set to Sweep Southern Australia Today
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. Get ready to rug up—a wintry blast is on its way, and it’s about to hit much of southern and western Australia over the next several days. A complex low-pressure system is sweeping across the country starting today and is expected to stick around until mid-next week, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and even snow in some areas. Western Australia is first in the firing line. Today and tomorrow, the state will be hit with rain and thunderstorms, with 20mm to 50mm of rainfall expected in Perth and surrounding areas. Further inland, lighter rain will push into the Gascoyne and Pilbara districts. By Sunday through Wednesday, the system shifts eastward, heading towards Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria, bringing similar wet and windy conditions. In Adelaide, expect a bit of a rollercoaster: a high of 22°C on Sunday, but cooling down to just 15°C by Tuesday. Sydney will feel the chill too—starting in the low to mid-20s on Tuesday, then dipping to 18°C by Wednesday. One of the biggest impacts will be in the Murray-Darling Basin on Tuesday, where widespread rain is expected thanks to a burst of pre-frontal moisture. And yes, some of that will fall as snow and hail over southern parts of the region. The good news? The wintry blast won’t last too long. Warmer weather is expected to bounce back once the system passes later next week. Authorities are likely to issue severe weather warnings ahead of the front, so keep an eye on local alerts—and maybe keep that umbrella and jacket close by. - Criminal Case Prompts Warnings to 1,000+ Sydney Families
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. More than 1,000 families in Sydney have received letters from NSW and Federal Police, warning them that their child may have come into contact with a man accused of serious criminal behaviour involving children. But authorities are stressing: receiving the letter doesn’t mean your child was harmed. As first reported by 2GB's Ben Fordham, the man—who worked in Sydney’s northern suburbs and the CBD—was charged in October 2024 and is currently in custody. For legal reasons, police haven’t released his name, where he worked, or any identifying details about the children involved. What we do know is that investigators allegedly found confronting material on the man’s phone, and he’s been accused of inappropriate behaviour. Despite the serious nature of the charges, police believe only a very small number of children were directly involved. Still, in an effort to be thorough and transparent, they’ve sent out more than 1,000 letters to families whose children may have crossed paths with the man. “If you received a letter, it means your child might have had contact with him—not that they were a victim,” police explained. Authorities are urging families to read the letter carefully and contact the dedicated hotline provided if they have any questions or concerns. The NSW Police Force and the Australian Federal Police are working closely with other agencies, including NSW Health, the Department of Education, the Department of Communities and Justice, and the Office of the Children’s Guardian, as part of a wider investigation and victim identification process. This remains an ongoing investigation, and families are encouraged to stay informed and reach out if they need support. More updates to come on AusNewsLanka .
- Global Rankings Drop for 70% of Australian Universities
At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates. It’s been a rough year for Australia’s top universities, with most sliding down the latest QS World University Rankings—reflecting a sector facing pressure from all sides. The University of Melbourne, usually Australia’s standout, dropped seven places to 19th, while the University of Sydney slipped from 18th to 25th globally. UNSW also edged down a spot, from 19th to 20th. Out of 36 Australian universities ranked, a whopping 25 dropped in position, while only seven managed to climb. It’s the third-largest percentage fall globally—only Austria and Russia fared worse. So, what’s going on? According to experts, it’s a mix of funding cuts, uncertainty over international student policies, and growing competition from fast-improving universities in countries like China and India. Angel Calderon, a strategist at RMIT and advisor to the rankings board, says the sector’s problems have been building for years. “Restructuring, staff changes, funding issues—these all impact how the world sees our universities,” he explained. “We’ve seen Australia’s academic and employer reputation steadily drop.” And that reputation is key. The QS rankings are based on several factors—reputation, research impact, teaching quality, international outlook, and sustainability. This year, Australia was hit hardest in academic and employer reputation, with 20 and 30 universities falling in those categories respectively. The ongoing tension with the U.S., including suspensions of research programs and political pressure from Donald Trump’s second administration, hasn’t helped either. Seven Australian universities were directly affected, and others have been scrutinised for how closely they align with American interests. Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific rivals are rising fast. In China and India, over 40% of universities moved up the list. Even four out of New Zealand’s eight universities climbed in rank. QS CEO Jessica Turner says Australia’s global standing is now at risk due to a mix of government migration reforms, visa changes, and public debates linking international students to housing pressures. “There’s a real need for stable policy and sustainable research funding,” she said. Despite the drop, there are still some silver linings. Australia ranks fifth in the world for universities in the global top 100, with nine unis making the cut—a sign that there’s still a solid foundation to build on. Vicki Thomson, CEO of the Group of Eight (Go8), agrees the results are a wake-up call—but says there’s also reason to be proud. “Having two Go8 members in the world’s top 20 and six in the top 50 is an achievement we shouldn’t take for granted,” she said. “But to stay competitive, we need to invest, adapt, and support our students and researchers.” In short: Australia’s higher education sector is still world-class—but unless there’s strong action to protect it, it risks falling behind in an increasingly competitive global race.
