Jonathan How from the Bureau of Meteorology said Sydney commuters felt the chill hard this morning. “It’s very cold and windy right now,” he said. “The feels-like temperature at the airport is around zero — and in Western Sydney, it’s closer to -1.” And it’s not just Sydney. In Canberra, it felt like -4°C at 7am, only creeping up to just above zero by 9am. Melbourne Airport saw a “feels-like” of 1.2°C early on, warming slightly to 3.8°C. In Adelaide, it was 5.8°C, reaching 6.6°C by 9am. Over in Hobart, it was a near-freezing 1.1°C at 7am — barely budging to 1.3°C two hours later. And guess what? More of the same is coming tonight and tomorrow morning. The cold front even delivered snow overnight in parts of NSW, with alpine regions enjoying some decent snow dumps, and flakes spotted in Oberon. “We’ll see the snow ease today and shift to higher ground, but the real story now is the frost,” How said. Expect widespread frost all the way from NSW into southern Queensland, with clear skies and freezing overnight temps setting the stage. In a discovery that’s raising a few eyebrows (and some alarms), scientists in China have found 20 brand new bat viruses, including two closely related to the deadly Nipah and Hendra viruses. Researchers examined the kidneys of 142 bats from 10 species, collected over four years from five locations in Yunnan province. Using advanced genetic sequencing, they identified 22 viruses in total — 20 of which have never been seen before. What’s causing the most concern are two new henipaviruses — the same family as Nipah and Hendra — both of which are known to cause severe and often fatal illness in humans. These new viruses were found in fruit bats living near orchards, close to villages where people live and work. Since henipaviruses can spread through bat urine, and these were found specifically in the kidneys, it raises an obvious worry: contaminated fruit or direct contact could lead to the viruses jumping to humans or animals. Should We Be Worried? Dr Alison Peel, a wildlife disease ecologist and vet from the University of Sydney, says it’s too early to panic. “It’s concerning, yes,” she said, “but we don’t yet know if these new viruses can actually infect humans.” She explained that there are other viruses closely related to Hendra and Nipah that don’t pose any real threat, so more lab testing is needed to understand the actual risk. Dr Peel also noted that the situation in Yunnan offers a lesson for Australia. “Our research on Hendra in Australia shows that habitat destruction and food shortages push bats closer to people, which increases the chance of virus spillover,” she said. “Instead of blaming bats, we’ve found that protecting their food sources helps reduce the risk — and it’s a sustainable solution.” A Wake-Up Call for Australia? Associate Professor Vinod Balasubramaniam from Monash University says this discovery should not be taken lightly, especially given how similar rural Australian landscapes are to the bat-friendly orchards in Yunnan. “The similarities are striking,” he said. “And with the level of global travel and trade today, a virus outbreak in China could quickly make its way to Australia.” He said the study gives new insight into the importance of monitoring bat kidneys specifically — and that enhanced biosecurity and surveillance in Australia is crucial right now. But not everyone’s been so lucky. Some Australians are still stuck in the Middle East — especially in Doha, after a US military base in Qatar was hit by missile strikes. That attack caused widespread flight cancellations, leaving many stranded at airports with no clear plan. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, is shaking things up when it comes to the upcoming ban on social media use for kids under 16 — and YouTube is right at the center of it. In a response to Communications Minister Anika Wells, Inman Grant has submitted a list of five major recommendations about how the draft rules should be shaped before the ban takes effect later this year. And one of the biggest shocks? She’s suggested that YouTube be removed from the exemption list entirely. Right now, YouTube is actually excluded from the ban in the draft rules — something the previous Communications Minister had allowed — but no one has really explained why. According to eSafety, this just doesn’t make sense. “While YouTube has many educational and positive uses,” the eSafety office said, “its popularity among kids and its design features that can expose them to harmful content don't align with the goal of reducing harm.” A recent Youth Survey from eSafety backs this up: 76% of kids aged 10 to 15 said they’ve used YouTube — making it more popular than TikTok, Instagram, or Snapchat. Among 10 to 12-year-olds, it’s especially dominant. The Commissioner’s concern is that YouTube isn’t all that different from the platforms that are facing the ban. It uses the same types of persuasive features — auto-play, infinite scroll, algorithm-driven recommendations, and social engagement metrics — all of which can encourage overuse and increase exposure to harmful content. In other words, if TikTok is getting banned for those reasons, why should YouTube get a pass? Aside from the YouTube recommendation, Inman Grant also wants the government to: Add a clear explanation to the rules, outlining the intent of the social media age restrictions, Look at both the purpose of a platform and its potential risks when deciding what falls under the ban. Minister Wells is now reviewing all of the eSafety Commissioner’s recommendations and will decide how to move forward before the rules are formally introduced to Parliament. Australia Post is hiking up the price of stamps by as much as 60 cents per letter, and the national consumer watchdog says it won’t stand in the way of the change. From July 17, here’s how prices will look: A small letter will cost $1.70, up from $1.50 A regular large letter (up to 125g) goes from $3 to $3.40 The largest letters (up to 250g) jump from $4.50 to $5.10 The good news? Prices for concession stamps and seasonal greeting cards will stay the same. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said today it won’t object to the 13.3% increase because Australia Post is actually losing money on its letter services. “We understand that these price increases will mean extra costs for consumers,” ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said. “But the evidence shows that the costs of delivering letters are now higher than the revenue they bring in.” In fact, Australia Post is currently delivering only about two letters per household per week, and that number is expected to fall even further—by over 10% in the next few years. Even with the price hike, the ACCC doesn’t think Australia Post will be able to break even on its letter service. Brakey said they’ve recommended Australia Post find ways to ease the cost burden on businesses and others who still rely on physical mail. They also suggested helping vulnerable Australians by possibly raising the limit on concession stamps, which is currently capped at 50 per customer per year. Still, even after the increase, Australia’s basic stamp price of $1.70 is below the global median of $1.93 among private postal providers. Australia Post first flagged this price hike back in November, and while the ACCC can’t approve the change, it has the power to object. Now that it hasn’t, the final stamp of approval lies with the federal communications minister—unless they step in, the new prices will kick in from July 17.
