According to the CSIRO, the "hidden costs" of this system could be as much as $274 billion, making it one of the highest per capita in the world. This is the first time Australia’s national science agency has done a full stocktake of the entire food system, and it paints a complex picture. On one hand, it's a massive success story: around 100,000 farmers are feeding 100 million people globally – including Australia’s population of 27 million. But CSIRO’s Agriculture and Food Director, Dr. Michael Robertson, says we need to look beyond the dollars and exports. “Our food system isn’t just about farming or exports,” he said. “It’s about making sure all Australians have access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food – and doing it in a way that protects our environment for future generations.” One of the key takeaways from the report is that Australia lacks a clear, coordinated national food policy. Right now, decisions that affect the food system are scattered across different government departments – from agriculture and health to transport and urban planning. That fragmentation, says CSIRO’s Sustainability Research Director, Larelle McMillan, makes it hard to deal with big-picture challenges like sustainability, food insecurity, and health. “We need to move from looking at food in silos to actually connecting the dots,” she explained. “That means coordinated reporting on how the food system is performing – and where it’s falling short.” One glaring example? There’s a big change happening from July 1, but like with most hot topics, there’s also a fair bit of misinformation flying around. So let’s clear things up—what’s real, what’s not, and what you actually need to know. What’s actually changing with super on July 1? There are a few key updates coming: Super guarantee rate is going up: Employers will now have to contribute 12% of your salary into your super, up from the current 11.5%. This is the final step in a planned series of increases that’s been happening since 2021. More super for paid parental leave: People receiving government-paid parental leave will now also earn super entitlements. Some thresholds are being indexed: The general transfer balance cap and the defined benefit income cap will both go up to reflect inflation. But the big headline? That’s the new tax rule for super balances over $3 million. What’s the deal with the $3 million super tax? From July 1, if you’ve got more than $3 million in your super, you’ll be hit with a new tax. Here’s how it works: Earnings on the portion of your balance above $3 million will be taxed at an extra 15% on top of the usual 15%. So in effect, those earnings will cop a 30% tax in total. This only affects the wealthiest 0.5% of Aussies with super – about 80,000 people. Still confused? Here’s a quick example: Let’s say you’ve got $4 million in super, and it grows to $4.5 million in a year. That’s $500,000 in earnings. Since one-third of the total balance is over the $3 million mark, one-third of the earnings ($166,667) will be hit with the extra 15%. That’s an additional $24,750 in tax. If your super balance is under $3 million? This change won’t affect you at all. When does this all start? July 1 is the official start date. But here’s where it gets a bit unusual – the new tax hasn’t been passed into law just yet. Parliament won’t be back in session before that date, but the government is confident it’ll go through. Labor’s got a strong majority, and the Greens are on board too (though they might want some tweaks, like linking the $3 million threshold to inflation). Treasurer Jim Chalmers has said it’s totally normal for tax changes to be legislated after they kick in, so it’s going ahead either way. What about talk of big changes to when and how you can access your super? Total nonsense. You might’ve heard whispers about the preservation age (the age when you can start accessing your super) going up from 60 to 70, or new withdrawal limits being put in place. These are completely false. There are no changes to when you can access your super, and no new restrictions on how much you can withdraw. In fact, this fake news has been circulating so much that the Tax Office had to step in and call it out as “classic fake news”. The takeaway? There are a few legit changes coming to super on July 1—especially that new tax if you’ve got over $3 million in your account. But a lot of the scary stuff being thrown around is just misinformation. If your balance is under $3 million, you’re not going to see any change in how your super is taxed. More than five years after COVID-19 first turned our lives upside down, health officials are once again sounding the alarm — this time about a new variant called NB.1.8.1 that’s starting to spread across Australia just as winter approaches. This new strain is part of the Omicron family, and while it’s not causing panic just yet, experts are keeping a very close eye on it. What’s This New Variant? NB.1.8.1 has popped up in several countries recently — including Hong Kong, mainland China, and parts of the US — and it's now being detected in growing numbers right here in Australia. The World Health Organisation recently flagged it as a “variant under monitoring”, which means it's not considered dangerous like some previous strains, but its spread is worth tracking. In Australia, the numbers vary: In South Australia, it made up less than 10% of sequenced cases. In Victoria, it was more than 40%. In Western Australia, wastewater testing shows NB.1.8.1 is now the dominant strain in Perth. Meanwhile, New South Wales has classified COVID levels as "moderate", with early signs suggesting this new variant could be behind the uptick in cases. Time for a Booster? Health Minister Mark Butler says now’s the time to think about your last COVID shot — especially as we head into the colder months. “If you’re over 75 and it’s been more than six months since your last booster, you should get one,” he told.“If you’re aged 65–74, and it’s been over 12 months, you should also get one. And for everyone else — have a serious think about it.” When Did NB.1.8.1 Appear? The WHO says NB.1.8.1 was first detected in samples back in late January 2025. It’s descended from the JN.1 variant, which has been circulating globally. What Are the Symptoms? So far, the symptoms are pretty similar to earlier Omicron strains: Sore throat Fatigue Fever Mild cough Muscle aches Nasal congestion Some people may also experience gastrointestinal issues, but thankfully, there’s no evidence yet that it causes more severe illness than previous variants. Will Vaccines Still Work? The good news? Yes. According to the WHO, current vaccines — particularly the latest booster targeting JN.1 — should still offer strong protection against serious illness from NB.1.8.1. So while the virus may have changed slightly, our best defence — getting vaccinated and staying up to date — still works. At AusNewsLanka , we aim to keep the Sri Lankan community informed with timely updates. එළඹෙන ලෝක දුම්කොළ විරෝධී දිනය වෙනුවෙන්, අධ්‍යයනයකින් හෙළි වූයේ ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන් දිනකට සිගරට් සඳහා රුපියල් මිලියන 520 ක් වැය කරන බවත්, 2019 දී දුම්පානයෙන් සිදුවන සෞඛ්‍ය හා ආර්ථික පිරිවැය රුපියල් බිලියන 214 ක් බවත්, මධ්‍යසාර හා මත්ද්‍රව්‍ය තොරතුරු මධ්‍යස්ථානය (ADIC) දුම්කොළ පුරුදු පිළිබඳ මාධ්‍ය හමුවකදී පැවසීය. 2020 ගෝලීය වැඩිහිටි දුම්කොළ සමීක්ෂණයට අනුව, ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන් දිනකට දුම්කොළ පරිභෝජනය කරන මුළු සංඛ්‍යාව මිලියන 3.2 ක් වන අතර, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සෑම වසරකම අකල් මරණ 20,000 ක් දුම්කොළ නිසා සිදු වේ. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ වසරකට ප්ලාස්ටික් සිගරට් බිලියන 1.8 ක් පමණ නිසි ලෙස ඉවත නොදමන අතර එමඟින් විෂ සහිත රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය 7000 ක් පරිසර පද්ධතියට ඇතුළු වී පරිසරයට හානි වේ. මධ්‍යසාර හා මත්ද්‍රව්‍ය තොරතුරු මධ්‍යස්ථානය (ADIC) විසින් කරන ලද මාධ්‍ය හමුවේදී, “නිසි බදු එකතු කිරීමේ යාන්ත්‍රණ නොමැතිකම නිසා, සිගරට් වලින් ලැබෙන රජයේ බදු ආදායම 2024 දී රුපියල් බිලියන 9.4 කින් අඩු වූ බවත්, ඒ වෙනුවට එය නිෂ්පාදකයාට ලාභයක් ලෙස මාරු කරන ලද” බවත් පැවසීය. දුම්කොළ සහ මධ්‍යසාර පිළිබඳ ජාතික අධිකාරියේ (NATA) සභාපති ආචාර්ය ආනන්ද රත්නායක මහතා පැවසුවේ “සිගරට් සඳහා වන බද්ද අඩු කිරීමෙන් සිගරට් ජාවාරම වැඩි විය හැකි යැයි ජනතාව සිතන අතර එය කිසිසේත්ම සත්‍ය නොවේ” යනුවෙනි. මධ්‍යසාර හා මත්ද්‍රව්‍ය තොරතුරු මධ්‍යස්ථානය (ADIC) විසින් සඳහන් කරන ලද තවත් ප්‍රධාන කරුණක් නම් සිගරට් සඳහා බදු-මිල 67% සිට 69% දක්වා වන අතර එය ලෝක සෞඛ්‍ය සංවිධානයේ නිර්දේශිත 75% ට වඩා අඩුය. පසුගිය දශකය තුළ සිගරට් අලෙවිය 54% කින් අඩු වී ඇතත්, ලංකා දුම්කොළ සමාගමේ බදු-පසු ලාභය 179% කින් වැඩි වී ඇති බව ADIC පැවසීය. Verite පර්යේෂණය විසින් කරන ලද පර්යේෂණයකින් හෙළි වී ඇත්තේ “ආර්ථික අර්බුදයෙන් පසු වැට් බද්දට යටත් වන බොහෝ නිෂ්පාදන සඳහා බද්ද දෙගුණයකට වඩා වැඩි වී ඇති නමුත් සිගරට් සඳහා එය ඇත්ත වශයෙන්ම අඩු වී ඇත” යනුවෙනි. 2024 දී බදු ආදායම අඩු වී ඇති වෙළඳපොලේ ඇති එකම නිෂ්පාදනය සිගරට් විය හැකි බවත්, සැපයුම්කරුවන්ගේ ආදායම වැඩි වී ඇති බවත් පර්යේෂණයේ සඳහන් විය. මෙම අභියෝගවලට මුහුණ දීම සඳහා පියවර ගනිමින් සිටින බව මධ්‍යසාර හා මත්ද්‍රව්‍ය තොරතුරු මධ්‍යස්ථානය (ADIC) පැවසීය. සිගරට් විකිණීම එකින් එක තහනම් කිරීම පිළිබඳ රාමුවක් යෝජනා කෙරෙන අතර, 2010 න් පසු උපන් පුද්ගලයින්ට දුම්කොළ විකිණීම තහනම් කිරීම ද සිදු කෙරේ. Big waves are coming — and if you're planning to hit the beach in NSW this week, you might want to rethink that. Boaters, rock fishers, surfers and swimmers are being strongly warned to stay out of the water, with massive swells and hazardous surf expected to pound the coastline. According to Weatherzone, a combination of storm-force winds, a low in the Tasman Sea, and a cold front is driving waves up to 10 metres high over large parts of the sea today. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a hazardous surf warning covering a huge stretch — around 2500km of the NSW coast, from Byron Bay all the way down to Eden. That’s almost the entire coast. Closer to shore, waves are expected to reach up to five metres early today, and with high tides from yesterday and today, that means some coastal erosion is likely, especially in vulnerable spots. Now for the good news: things will start to ease a bit from late today, with swell heights dropping to around two metres, and they’ll continue to decrease tomorrow and into Saturday. But there’s still a catch — forecasters say the wave period (basically, the time between waves) will be around 18 seconds at its peak. That means even if the ocean looks relatively calm, every 10 minutes or so, a sudden set of huge, powerful waves could roll in. These are known as "rogue sets", and they can easily catch people off guard. To make it even trickier, these waves can stir up stronger rips, so even experienced swimmers and surfers should be extra cautious. It’s a great week for storm-watching from a safe distance, but not a good time to be in the water. Stay safe and keep an eye on weather alerts if you’re near the coast. A dramatic scene unfolded at IKEA Springvale this morning after a fire broke out on the store’s roof, sending thick black smoke into the sky and triggering a flurry of emergency calls. Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) said they started getting multiple calls around 8:30am on Thursday, May 29, with witnesses spotting flames and heavy smoke coming from the multi-storey building at the corner of Princes Highway and Westall Road. The situation escalated quickly — so much so that it was bumped up to a second alarm response, which means more resources were rushed to the scene. The fire was located in the rooftop solar panels and had even started to creep into the ceiling space below, according to an FRV spokesperson. Right now, it’s not clear if the fire actually started in the panels themselves or in the area beneath them. In total, 28 firefighters were deployed, along with five pumpers, two aerial units, and three other appliances. Thanks to their quick work, crews had the fire under control by 9:07am — less than 40 minutes after it was first reported. Crews stayed behind to make sure the fire hadn’t spread and to assess any damage. Commander Samuel Webb later told ABC Radio that while the solar panels were damaged, there was no damage inside or outside the store itself, which is a huge relief. The Springvale Homemaker Centre, aside from the IKEA section, was expected to re-open later in the day. IKEA’s reopening is pending checks from safety authorities, including Energy Safe Victoria. Meanwhile, Vic Emergency issued a smoke warning for surrounding suburbs including Clayton, Clayton South, Mulgrave, and Springvale, so locals were advised to keep windows closed and avoid the smoke if possible.
